How to tell if non-clumping litter has been used?

So I'm relatively new to kitten care and bought some kitten-safe, non-clumping litter-- but it is quite dark and again, doesn't clump. I'm potty training the babies right now, so how do I tell if this is actually being used? Is this an example of a pee stain? (If the image doesn't work, there is a small patch of lighter and more dissolved litter in the middle)

Also, you can check their bedding for any odor or wetness to make sure no one is having problems understanding where to go. If there are enough boxes, they'll catch on. :)

Non clumping will usually kind of dissolve or fluff up. But the paper ones just look darker and have a smell.

If any cat steps on the litter it should leave at least one footprint on it, and you should see it.
Also, most litters track, so if a cat has walked on the litter, you should see some of it right outside the tray.
