To my understanding, CKD in cats is a lot like CKD in humans. A good diet and healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of CKD, delay the onset to later in life, and slow the progression once the kidneys do start to decline. In humans, diabetes and hypertension can lead to or exacerbate CKD, so I'd imagine that trying to avoid diabetes or obesity in cats would help. But there is no surefire preventative.

Some cats may eat Meow Mix kibble their whole life and have decent kidney function even into old age. Others could have an excellent diet and have CKD before they reach ten, if they're unlucky. There's a genetic component that can't be ruled out.
