I found a couple of fleas on my cat and some flea eggs, tried combing as much as I could out but he's resisting so it's difficult. Got some drops that are to be put on him topically but I'm hesitant about using them as they are chemicals to enter his bloodstream and he's already on prednosolone so I don't want to burden his liver even more. Would a shampoo help at this early stage?

There are a couple of topical flea treatments that say they do not enter the bloodstream - Advantage II and Frontline Plus. I personally would never try to shampoo a cat to try to eradicate fleas - as you'd have to do it repeatedly. This is even more true if your cat goes outdoors at all.

You are going to have to routinely vacuum the house and clean bedding and other items that your cat spends time on to try to remove whatever fleas/eggs are in the house. You will likely need to spray the house and the yard with pesticides as well.
