"The Haunting (of Hill House)", too, the old black & white film starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. It was much creepier than the remake with Liam Neeson and Mrs. Michael Douglas (I can never remember her name). The book is great, too. I think it was written by Shirley Jackson, who also wrote "The Lottery".
A very bad "B" movie called "S-s-s-s" is very scary. A mad scientist is turning people into snakes, with poor results. Of course, he gets his, in the end.
The one scary movie that stands out. . . . because I was so young and impressionable when I saw it. . . . is the "The Birds" . . . I think it's an Alfred Hitchcock movie.
It isn't my favorite by any means but the one that made the biggest impression was the first Poltergeist. I was allowed to watch it when I was around 7 and staying with a lax babysitter. I had nightmares for months! I still can't listen to static on a TV without getting a shiver actually.
I'm much more into thrillers than horror. Silence of the Lambs being one of my all time favorites...that's pretty spooky, does it count?
Ok, don't laugh: Cat People (with Natasha Kinski). It was probably the only scary movie that ever gave me nightmares.....my cat jumped on my bed the night that I saw it and I actually screamed.
Ghost stories is what scares me. "The Others" was very good and also the one with Bruce Willis as the psychiatrist to the little boy (can't remember the name of the movie). They are movies with not so much effects - they let you imagine most of the scary parts and think about them afterwards.
oooooooooo hoooooooooo oooooooo (okay that's me hoooing like I used to do to the kids in the neighborhood on Halloween! LOL!)
Nightmare on Elm Street (the 1st)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Jason (the 1st-the music still is creepy)
Night of the Living Dead (the 1st)
The Blob(tee hee! I still don't like to stick my hand in the garbage disposal)
Poltergeist
Exorcist
Omen
Signs
The Relic (my hubby liked it alot even though he hates scary movies)
I'm sure there are more...
