Hello everyone little back story. I have 2 male cats they are brothers from the same litter. My Smokey has a tiny mass at the corner of his eye. He had it at 4 weeks old and per the vet was most likely born with. He is all most two and we are going to have it removed( the mass not the eye). It has not grown at all but it does have hair growing out of it and it lays across his eye. It's not painful they don't believe but annoying and can cause problems such as blindess as her ages. I can't really get good photo if it cause again it is tiny. It's the hair across the eye that will cause the issue. His vet does not feel comfortable removing it so he is going to see a specialist in June. Has anyone ever heard or dealt with anything like this before?

I should also add they called a Dermoid and it's caused by problems with the embryo in utero

Hi! I have nothing of real value to offer, but I did a search on this site for dermoid cysts - and there were a few but mostly dealing with other body parts. There was one whose cat had a dermoid in one of his nostrils, which was going to be removed surgically. None of the related members are active on this site, and all of them are mostly from the early 2000s.

It is very interesting that these tumors/cysts involve hair growth, so I looked that up as well. Apparently, it is very common for these 'excess skin growths', which as you said happen in utero, seem to contain an overabundance of hair follicles, hence the reason for Mr. Smokey's issue.

If your vet has not already told you, you will find out that this is very rare in cats, so you are not likely to find too many folks to compare notes with. But when you visit the specialist, I would ask them if they are aware of a community forum or group that you could join to share information with. Here is what little bit I could find on dermoids, specifically to small animals. .

Hopefully other members will be able to share more information with you that I have been able to do.

Please keep us posted!!

Thanks yes my vet said my kittens brought 1st to them. Smokey's eye and Bandit and his sister had Bot Flies in them. The mom removed the females and they had to remove Bandits.

I am confused about the bot flies. Is the vet saying that is somehow connected to Smokey's issue?

No , they just said they have never seen it before.

So, the botflies were a separate issue, then? That being the case, I guess you will need to wait to see the specialist. I wish there was more support for you. But we will 'stick with you' if you want to 'stick with us' for support (however small that may be)!

Given that Smokey doesn't seem to be overly affected by this, and the mass has not grown, is a very good sign!

Yes, he actually didn't have one just Bandit and his sister. I will find out all I can and would more then happy to share with you all. From what I was told most of the time it's more of a cosmetic issue and are left alone. His is being removed because of the location can cause his to go blind as he ages and they want to remove it while he is still young.

Yes, if this is a dermoid, often times nothing at all is done. But, like you are saying, where his is located, especially with the hair growth issue, he would seem he needs to have it removed. From what I read, given this is considered a genetic defect, recurrence is non-existent. Maybe the specialist can offer more ideas.

Your poor little guy - but he is lucky to have you taking care of him! Our hearts are with Smokey and you. :hearthrob::redheartpump::hearthrob::redheartpump: Post anytime that you want - about anything you want - just for us to let you know you are not completely alone while you go through this journey.

My GSD developed a similar mass on his eyelid as you describe. The danger was that it would eventually irritate the eye enough to do damage and a veterinary ophthalmologist removed it; his vet was not comfortable doing the procedure, which I understood. Everything was fine after and it was not that stressful a procedure.
