Dark Patch On White Cats - At What Age Does It Fade?

I read that white cats are usually born with another fur color--their true fur color--which fades as they get older. When I adopted my kitty from the shelter, the vet said he appeared to be 1-2 years older. I assumed he was closer to 2 because he appeared full-grown. But I recall he did have some black fur on the top of his head. It faded away over the next several weeks.

How old does that typically happen? I'm curious because it will give me a better idea of how old he actually was. Thank you!

Some don't ever outgrow it, and some have it seasonally. I knew someone with a white cat who would get a gray streak on her head in the summer but was pure white in the winter. So it just all depends.
