Hi,

My fluffy has always been a bit of a picky eater but the past few days she won't eat anything or drink. We have tried a whole host of different foods, treats, tuna, chicken everything and she won't touch a thing. We took her to the vet on her second day of refusing to eat and the vet found nothing reallt wrong with her only slight gingivitis. She ran blood tests, cbc and it all came back normal. I've been force feeding her rehydration solution and petcal and a blended food smoothy but she hates it. Anyone have any idea what this could be? If she is still refusing food tonight or tomorrow i will take her to the vet again, any questions i should ask? She isn't using the litter box like she used to but no diarrhoea. She has lost quite a bit of weight since this started. She was 8.2lbs now she is 7.4lbs. Thanks

Hi!
Keep force feeding, even if she hates it she has to keep getting the moisture and nutrients.
I could post a list of other things to try, but this sounds like she might even need an appetite stimulant?

I don't know, it sounds like you've tried just about everything, and I apologize if there's duplicated things in this list;

(You might want to double-check with your vet just to be sure these things below are ok for your kitty).

Try some raw egg yolk. Egg white must always be cooked, and some people cook the white and make a slurry of sorts by adding in the raw yolk.

Also you could try making the Pedialyte here;
tent test for dehydration and home-made pedialyte recipe - The Daily Kitten

Also, try making one of these;
Kitten Glop Recipes - Supplementing Cats and Kittens with nutritious formula you make at home: presented by Bengal Cat breeder Foothill Felines. --This website has a number of kitten glop recipes, with ingredients that you may very well have in your house.

These can be used on their own or combined with food. Also, as mentioned if you heat the food a little - stir it so there aren't any hot spots from the microwave.

Or you could heat some water, about a tablespoon, and add that to canned food. A small glass works to stir it all up.
  • Chicken, beef or ham flavored baby food such as Gerber Stage 2 - make sure there is no garlic or onions in the ingredients
  • Tuna and/or the juice, a low mercury/low/no sodium brand is called SafeCatch
  • Salmon, mackerel
  • Sardines (make sure there are no bones)
  • boiled cut up chicken or turkey with no seasonings
  • canned kitten food any brand
  • Try mixing in Kitten Milk Replacer - there are recipes on the internet or store bought
  • Fish, tuna or BBQ flavored canned wet food (I personally have never seen BBQ flavors, but...)
  • Lickable cat treats or pouch treat 'gravy' poured over the food
  • kitten glop (recipes in website link above)
  • Bonito flakes
  • fortiflora
  • fish oil
  • green beans, asparagus mushed up
  • goat milk, or no lactose cow milk
  • whole cooked eggs (the white must always be cooked) or raw egg yolk now and then
  • broth with no salt and no garlic or onion or seasonings of any kind
  • There are also commercial toppers, Applaws is a brand that can work well as a topper
  • Some good treats would be freeze dried Purebites, Orijen, Meowtinis, Meowables, Only Natural Pet, Primal
  • There are also Lickimats that you could spread types of soft food onto, even plain unflavored yogurt, and even freeze it. Licking something can help a cat to feel better emotionally The LickiMat - Food Puzzles for Cats
  • shredded cheddar cheese

Hi. It sounds to me like it is the gingivitis - even if is just 'slight'. She just may be more sensitive to it than perhaps another cat would be. How is that being treated, or is it?

I don't know how long it's been since she stopped wanting to eat, but her weight loss is enough to be very concerning.

Hopefully, some of the suggestions Furballsmom Furballsmom gave you will work. And, I also agree about asking the vet about an appetite stimulant - and about something to help numb/dull the pain she must be feeling until the gingivitis is fully treated.

Hi everyone, thanks for your help. It seems that she has found some of her appetite this evening and has started to eat by herself. I think it was the change in routine, she's quite sensitive. I have recently been working more so spending less time at home. I'm still keeping a close eye on her and will keep up with syringe feeding if she doesn't eat enough by herself etc.

She's still grazing at her food today, still haven't seen her drink yet so I've been continuing with rehydration solution and petcal syrup. She's got her old energy back, woke me up meowing early doors to play etc again this am! So fingers and toes crossed she is on the mend....

So glad your kitty is eating again! My cat got sick and wasn't interested in food and we had him on Mirtazapine (put on the skin in his ear) for a bit which helped. Also, the vet gave me Purina Fortiflora (a powder probiotic) which he absolutely loves. He will eat anything if I sprinkle a little of that on it. Hope your kitty keeps feeling better!

She's eating exactly the same as before now, but weirdly still hasn't touched a drop of water. At least not from either the glass water bowl or their cat fountain (i have a camera watching their food and drink at all times, with 6 cats that share food and water bowls etc it would be impossible to know who is or isn't eating or drinking without it.) However she has always had a thing for drinking toilet water, which is why i don't use any chemicals in them other than right when I'm cleaning it and ensure its all flushed away properly before any cats get in there!) So i guess there is a small chance she has drunk from the loo, but I'm not convinced. She isn't interested in tuna water either. So i am still syringing rehydration solution and petcal in her a few times a day.

Hi!
Bless your heart for hanging in there with her!!

You could maybe try the liquid from canned vegetables such as green beans or canned asparagus, and see if she goes for that. :vibes::crossfingers:
