I have a kitten aged 10 months that has been fine using the litter tray until 6 weeks ago. Now he will try and avoid peeing in the tray as much as he can, why would he just stop using the tray?

If he checks out at the vet, let us know! There are many many other reasons he could stop using his box. To figure this out, I'd first be interested in hearing about his litter box set-up and the other members of the family. Is he the only pet? Any kids?
Did anything happen around the time he stopped using his box? (litter change, new furniture, a break up, schedule changes, food changes, weather change, etc, etc?)
