We have a male cat, 1.5 - 2 years old. We have 2 litterboxes for him and very rarely does he ever uses them to pee. He would go to a place and pee, then scratch the floor as if it were a litterbox. He does this every day, and especially at night when there is no one to stop him. He pees very frequently as well. Make a puddle and a few hours later makes another. Called the vet, the urine analysis costs nearly $100. We don't have that kind of money to splurge on something that has a chance come up with nothing. Frankly, the pee problem is becoming unbearable. Looked it up online, just a bunch of unhelpful, generic advice like "Just put more litterboxes in your house!" or "make sure the cat's environment is stress-free as possible!", which it is. Is a vet visit the only option left?

It's kinda weird though since he poops 100% of the time in the litterbox. I did continuously put the cat in the litterbox but each and every time he runs out.

How long have you had the cat? Has he ever peed in a litter box? Or is this new behaviour?

If new behaviour, then absolutely a vet visit is a good idea, as he may have a UTI, and need antibiotics.

If he's never ever, or rarely, peed in the litter box, maybe try using Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract® Cat Litter - the litter cats love™

And do ensure you use an enzyme cleaner to clean the places where he's peed, so he won't be able to smell his urine scent, and keep going to the same spots.

Sorry you are going though this but there is a good chance the urinalysis will come up positive. A UTI is usually the culprit. Talk to the vet maybe he or she will give you treatment for a suspected infection which is cheaper than the test itself. That is not the best way of handling but….

Have you read much about blocked cats and crystals? UTI’s can be precursor to getting blocked. I write this only to make you aware that if he gets blocked and you wait, his bladder will perforate (explode). So if he stops peeing just keep that in mind K.

I would do what hexiesfriend hexiesfriend suggested and ask them to give you antibiotics to treat a UTI just in case. Not ideal, but it’s not going to hurt him.

If he is not neutered, then this behavior is very common in intact males.

if he is neutered then I would strongly recommend a vet visit.

Also, just want to say this thinking is not correct. Using antibiotics when not needed is harmful. Not only due to side effects to the cat but also to the bigger issue of superbugs. Is this “one time” going to create the next MRSA, no, but if that’s everyone’s thinking then that’s where the issue lies. Plus, a young cat mostly likely does NOT have a bacterial UTI. Not saying an urinalysis isn’t needed but less than 5% of young cats have true bacterial infection.

Some cats like to dig and need at least 3 inches of litter. Also room to move around so he also may need a storage bin. He may not like the litter. If that doesn't work then see a vet to get a urinalysis. Better sooner than later then he might have something even more serious and it will cost more.

Also, does he always go in the same spot? Has anything changed? Try using a black light to spot any pee you missed.
