Hey All,

I am completely heartbroken because my cat was diagnosed with FIP.

He's only 5 months old.

Have had one vet look at this

Symptoms:
No fever
Fluid in the abdomen and chest
a bit of a raspy breath sometimes
Does not eat as much as his food as before but eats the dogs food
Fast breathing at times
Lethargic - was very active 2 weeks ago now is not

The vet told us that we should euthanize our Kitten. I'm not sure what to do, or if I should get a second diagnosis. Should we take the fluid out of his chest at the animal ER?

Please help.

I’m so sorry to hear about this. FIP is such a horrible disease. :alright:

FIP can be difficult to diagnose, so you could take him to another vet to get a second opinion.

So very sorry. It may not hurt to get a second opinion. So difficult to diagnose since the symptoms are like so many things. I would think they could check the fluid, not sure if it makes a definitive diagnosis but it may help you make some decisions. Bless you.

Second opinions are always nice, even if all that comes out of it is piece of mind. Especially with such an important and difficult decision. If you do get a second opinion, removing some of the fluid will make the kitty much more comfortable for the time being, so either way would've been okay! I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

Hey All,

Thank you for your comments but sadly my beautiful prince Yoshi passed away the same night. I got the second opinion at an emergency hospital and we had to euthanize him because if we let him go on he would have only had days and it would have been worse for him.

Thank you so much, I just miss him now. He was only 5 months, I feel so sad that he did not get to live longer, he used to sleep on my chest every night. I just miss his presence and hope he's in a place as beautiful as his soul is.

Fluid in the abdomen and chest is most likely FIP. A second opinion is never a bad idea, but I think it is probably best to prepare for the worst. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. :(

ETA: I just read your update that the kitten didn't make it. My sympathies for your loss! :(

So very sorry. We are still fighting for my 5 month old boy. We were told Toxoplasmosis or FIP. He is not responding to the Clindamycin after the amount of time they thought he should if it were Toxoplasmosis. He does not have fluid build up so we are continuing to treat and hope for the best. It is heart breaking no matter how long they have been with us, years or months, they put an indelible mark on our lives and heart. I am so truly sorry you are going through this.

Thank you so much. I am also sorry that you are going through this. Have hope, I will also pray for you and your fur baby tonight. If it comes down to letting go, be with him and always remember that they went on with their hearts filled with love not loneliness. I've felt guilty through these days, because I had to get him euthanized, but I knew it was the right thing because the FIP had advanced and he would have suffered much more than the breathing issues he started to face. All love is eternal, no matter what they will always be with us. They would want us to be happy until they see us again.

I did not mean to put my issue off on you and I appreciate your kind words. I just wanted you to know that I understand the position you were put in. There can be no guilt for something that we have no control over. There will always be when that time comes and they depend on us to make that very difficult decision. We have been through this somewhat in the past with much older cats so this blindsided me and I can imagine you too. No matter what and no matter the outcome we will love him through this as you also did. We are in the group of those that have loved and were loved by these sweet , innocent amazing little souls. Please take care of yourself.

No problem, I really liked talking to you about this because it helps me know that there are people out there that understand and feel for my situation. You take care too!

Please don't feel guilty. You made the kind and responsible choice. I know how painful it is to have to make the decision to put a pet to sleep, but based on what you have said there was no other outcome possible here. I'm sorry. :(

Thank you so much. I need all of this, I'm still heart broken, every little thing reminds me of him. It's like there's a gaping hole in my chest, but I'm trying to be strong for him and myself.

Hope all of you affected by FIP are doing alright. On January 30th I lost my beautiful Shansa to FIP. Her sister, Sophie, is now fighting it. Today will be the day she crosses the rainbow bridge. My brave girls put up fights. Sending thoughts to you during this heartbreaking time. Thank you for posting. I feel a little less alone in all of this.

Hey, I hope you are doing alright also. I know it's hard, but we will be strong for them. I bet my little Yoshi is playing with your beautiful Shansa right now up on the rainbow bridge, after that they will greet your Sophie and play or cuddle. They will all be at peace and will stop hurting. One day we will see them again, after that it will be eternal.

Here is a picture of Yoshi.

Since this makes you feel better, I suggest you post their stories here: Zen By Cat | House of Nekko | FIP Warriors | Share Stories

In that website you will find the FIP warriors, and their stories. I'm going to post my Yoshi's this weekend.
