Hi there! I'm new to the forum and have 3 cats (16, 7, 2 years old)
One of my kitties received his second THR last week. For the last couple months I'd been searching for others experiences with them and came up mostly empty so figured I would post something in case it's helpful for someone else.
Howie was just under 2 years old when he started limping badly after he had a freakout and bumped his hip against a piece of furniture. We assumed it was a sprain so gave him a week to see if there was improvement, but there wasn't. The vet also thought it was a sprain - but in both legs - not just one like I originally thought - and gave us some painkillers and told me to stretch his legs each day. No improvement after two weeks and so he suggested an x Ray. The x Ray came back showing his right hip was fractured and the left was also impacted. He explained that it was an inherited trait - compounded by the fact that Howie was neutered very young.
I was then sent to a specialist at another office. Options provided were FHO and THR. (The specialist ALSO noted that Howie had a heart murmur- something the original vet missed, so we also visited a heart specialist who did an echocardiogram which confirmed a low risk heart disease)
We decided on the Total Hip Replacements due to Howie's youth. The first was done on 7/25/17 and the second on 8/31/17. Since both of his hips were messed up, his recovery after the second seems like it's going much better. Zero sign of discomfort and he is not liking staying cooped in his large dog crate home - despite fluffy beds and cat tv.
Anyway just wanted to throw this out there in case anyone had questions on THR in cats.
