Hello. I joined recently and posted in the "behavior" forum about a scratching issue with my cat.
My cat, a female, first came to me on a cold January morning. A local feral cat in my neighborhood had three kittens. I was in my kitchen one morning when I heard a noise at the sliding-glass back door. There she was, a kitten less than 5 inches long ... shaking from the cold and going "Mew, mew, mew." Fortunately, I'd just finished drying some clothes. I took a warm towel, folded it up and put it on the dining room floor. Then, I slid open the back door, picked up the kitten, and placed it on the towel. I poured her a bowl of milk (seemingly bigger than she was, hehe) ... and she walked from the towel to the bowl and "finished" all but a little at the bottom of the bowl. Then, she went back to the towel and slept for a few hours.
I was watching TV in the living room when I heard another "Mew, mew, mew." I went to the dining room and found her standing by the sliding-glass door. I opened it up and out she bounded. But, the next morning, deja vu ... "Mew, mew, mew." I repeated the process of the towel and milk. Again, she went to sleep on the towel. But when I later heard a "Mew, mew, mew" and found her at the back door again, opening it, she sniffed the air for a few seconds ... and walked right back to the towel (grin). That's when I knew she was my cat.
I didn't name her immediately, figuring a name would come to me eventually. Then one day, I saw her walk across the living room carpet up to the drapes ... then walk vertically, claw over claw, UP the drapes until she got to the top. She sat there "mewing" as if she was bragging over her accomplishment, hehe. And my first thought was to name her Hillary ... not for Hillary Clinton, but for Sir Edmund Hillary who climbed Mt. Everest. But when I tried to take her down from the drapes, she attached her claws to them in such a way that it sounded like pulling apart two pieces of velcro.
So, I named her Velcro.
She's now 5 years old, about two feet long (not counting her tail) and solid white. One of these days, I'll be picking up a digital camera and take some photos to post here.
P.S. BTW, the other two kittens found homes, too ... but I have no idea where their mom went. She took off for parts unknown.
