We're down to the wire (I think) to bring home our Maine Coon kitten beginning of September. The breeder hasn't yet given us a definite date, but I'm assuming I'll hear from her any day now - she had appointments for the litter to have their final vaccinations this week and she said once that was done she'd know when we'd be able to come take and get her.
So, I'm now starting to think we'd better start doing some shopping! Being as I've never had a kitten before, and my husband always just kind of wound up with them (and it's been decades since he had one) I'm really not familiar with kitten toys at all, what's appropriate other than knowing that certain items are to be avoided due to choking hazards.
She'll be confined for at least a few days in our spare room to acclimate her to the house, and to do proper introductions with our resident cat (we've been through the process previously so we're ok on that end) so we'd like to make sure she has a comfortable space with things to keep her occupied when my husband and I aren't in there with her. We'll be tag-teaming on that, I'll be taking the week off so that she gets the attention she needs as does Cocoabean during this change.
What I'm really looking for mostly at the moment are toys which will keep her occupied overnight, we have plenty of daytime toys such wands, lasers, tunnels, etc. We already have a couple of track ball type thing; one kitten sized we bought by mistake a while ago and the other with a scratcher in the middle. I figured I'll get some springs, fuzzy balls, little stuffed things but I'm at a loss what else might be good for her.
Also, will get a covered comfy hidey bed, a small sized scatching post and something for her to climb although the room does have things she can get up on to, I don't mind her climbing on anything in there - if she can manage it yet LOL.
Also, what size litter box would be good as a starter? I'm assuming she'll be a little larger than most 16 week old kittens being she's a Maine Coon - wondering if I should just get a normal sized box for her "safe" room and not worry about that too much? And, at that age is it ok for her to be using clumping litter? I'd think she already would be past the stage of trying to eat litter.
I'm such a noobie for tiny cats! Help me!
