Hi Everyone

My cat Aurora has been peeing on the area rug in the basement for over a week. I took her last week for a full blood work up, thyroid, Urine culture, x rays and the culture final results came back with white cells but no infection so the vet said it's inflammation that is making her FEEL like she has a UTI. I just ran and got some d - mannose last night and have been trying that. I also read good things about slippery elm bark. Wondering if anyone has used Dasequin for bladder inflammation/peeing outside the litter box?

I have used D mannose along with Cornsilk or Marshmallow extracts. For the D mannose I give 250 mg per day split into 2 doses. I just dissolve some in water and syringe it. I use slippery elm for digestive issues. It can be used for inflammation so it might be worth a try. I make slippery elm into a syrup and give 1-3x per day.

shadowsrescue shadowsrescue would you say for the natures way brand slippery em it says 400mg per capsule I just gave her 1/2 capsule mixed with baby food. Should I have that once or twice per day? Do you think it’s ok to give both d mannose and slippery elm on the same day?

I would give 1/2 capsule total for the day. If you can split that in 1/2 and give it twice a day that would be best. Yet I know that splitting a small capsule can be hard. I use the powder so it's much easier. Yes, you do want to give D Mannose and slippery elm too. I used to just mix it all up together in some baby food and sometimes thinned with a bit of water.

The best thing for your kitty is water, water water. It really helps to flush the bladder. My cats are not much into drinking water. I even tried a fountain. I add extra water to their wet food and at times have had to syringe water. Dry food is not good at all for cats with urinary issues. Make sure your cat is getting plenty of water. I add 1-2 T. of water to the canned food that I feed 3x a day. I watch urine output closely too.

The good thing is Aurora drinks a ton of water so that’s a plus. I will take your advice and split the dose and also co tinier with the d mannose. I am trying to clean the area rug every time she pees but it’s one of those shaggy ones from Costco. I’m afraid to throw it out because I don’t want to have her pick another one to pee on but then I’m wondering if I’m self sabotaging keeping it there. I’m using spot shot carpet cleaner apparently it is the same active ingredient as some other cat Urine cleaner people like. Not a fan of natures miracle I think it smells bad.

Thanks so much! Good new to report the past 24 hours she has peed in the box everytime! Keeping up with the 1/2 capsule slippery elm 2x per day. The home depot has the zep I’ll try that as well this weekend!

Such good news!! I hope she continues to pee in the box. I have read to keep up with both D mannose and slippery elm for 30 days. Then start to lower dosage.

My boy has been on slippery elm for almost 2 months. Only once a day now. He also gets Marshmallow extract 1x a day. So far so good.

It also helps with inflammation. It also has been shown to keep urine clumps normal in size. My boy had large urine output, but only once every 24-36 hours. The combination of D Mannose, slilppery elm and Marshmallow has helped to keep urine output 2-3x per day with normal size.

Ok that’s great! Do you mix all three together in baby food? How much marshmallow capsule are you giving? Full capsule? Thanks so much for all the helpful tips! Out of the two carpet cleaners you suggested which do you prefer? Sounds like you prefer the wee wee one? I can skip the zep and just order wee wee if you think it’s better.

Such good news!! Just keep up with it for at least 30 days. Then you can start to wean and see how she does. At the first sign that something's wrong, start up the regime again. I know that my boy is on his for life!

Is there any harm if I just keep this up and dint wean? It’s already part of the routine and she loves the baby food before breakfast and dinner with the he slippery elm in it so I dint mind making this the norm.

Keeping her on slippery elm all the time should just be fine. It's good for inflammation throughout the body. Yet, she really doesn't need the D mannose all the time. I would stop that after 2-4 weeks.

Also for the slippery elm, I make a syrup out of it. I keep it in the fridge for a week and give 1 t. of the syrup once a day. It really stretches how much powder you need. Here is a link about it. Scroll down to where it says using slippery elm and how to create a syrup.

 I am very happy to read that slippery elm bark (SE) has worked well for you both. I am a HUGE proponent. Just as Shadowsrescue does, I also use marshmallow root. I usually try to make decoctions by simmering coarse cut herbs in a covered pan over very low heat for 5-10 minutes. To me, SE has better demulcent properties and I use it for intestinal and respiratory issues (works great for my ferals when they have URI) and it works well for UTI but I prefer marshmallow root for kidney and urinary issues as it seems to work slightly better. I suppose SE and MR are pretty much interchangeable. I tend to use decoctions because of the hydration issue but as you have found, powdered works well, too. If you want to brew a decoction from the capsules, slowly blend the powder into a paste. Other considerations are red raspberry leaf and chamomile teas to soothe spasms and cramping (that urge to go/push); these work well combined with the other herbs (just add them to the covered pot after it's removed from heat and steep 3-5 minutes).
One important note: slippery elm, and to a lesser extent, marshmallow root, can interfere with the absorption of medications so be sure to administer antibiotics and other meds equidistant from the herbals.
And these herbs* are excellent for humans, too. Many a young lady's monthly miseries are eased by red raspberry leaf; many of my coworkers have been given relief from diarrhea by using slippery elm and from UTIs by taking marshmallow root. :agree:

* technically, the herbs are the leaves and the rest of the plant (roots, seeds, fruits) are the spices but I feel that most people know what I mean.

Well I’m back. I have been very diligent to give Aurora 1/4 tsp d mannose powder, 1/2 capsule slippery elm, and 1/2 capsule of s boullardi mixed in baby food in the am. PM she gets the other 1/2 slippery elm capsule and 1/2 s boullardi. She has been using her litter boxes beautifully but over night there were not as many pees in the box ( my other one Mulan makes smaller pees so I know who’s is who’s) I pulled back the basement area rug and yep two fresh spots. She peed again before dinner I just missed her and she was burrying the carpet. I’m at a loss. The vet said the urine culture showed white cells which meant inflammation. No infection. I hate to repeat the culture again and spend money unnecessarily. The vet recommended cosequin sprinkle capsules so I ordered that this morning. Apparently that’s good for bladder inflammation. Anyone have any other ideas? She’s clearly not feeling good she’s under my husbands desk wanting to be alone. The vet had given her a convenia injection about three or four weeks ago when I took her in. Should I take her for another? They did x rays and apparently everything looked normal and her blood work was totally normal including her thyroid and blood glucose.

I forgot to also mention the past week she has been sneezing quite a bit nothing coming from her nose but she will sneeze multiple times in a row and it sounds like she is pushing air out of her nose.
