On Sunday, I watched the third part of an excellent series aired on PBS entitled, "1916: The Easter Rebellion" and was transfixed by the main theme, as I was the first time I watched the documentary. It is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, deeply symbolic, as are most Irish songs. After researching the translated lyrics (it is sung in Irish, which language I do not understand), it became even more meaningful. My European ancestors were Irish and I have studied the history for a long time. The words are from a poem by one of the martyrs of the Rising, Padraig Pearse:
Everything you see in the video is a reference to the events of that time.

Not so much now, just a few now and then, because most of them have headed to the surrounding fields for the day, but the sandhill cranes in the midst of their migration while they stop over and bulk up at the Platte River in Nebraska - most of the flooding is further east fortunately.

In the morning and evening - the sheer quantity of birds, and their volume is really incredible!!

Oh, listen to them! The crane is very symbolic for me, and beloved above all birds. Have you seen the Japanese cranes dance? It is a thrilling, moving sight! They mate for life and are extremely beautiful.

*My sympathy, PushPurrCatPaws PushPurrCatPaws and though it is blessedly tranquil here right now, I've heard the song of the jackhammer more times here in this residential neighborhood than I have anywhere else in any of the myriad places I've lived!*

Had this one stuck in my head for the last 50 years. As a little kid in the early 70s, my friend's dad would play this one all the time at sleep overs. Never knew who did it or where or when it was from. This morning I put some of the lyrics in Google--Mystery solved.
