C’mon, Lookit these lil guys! For those of you who fear bats, these are orphaned baby flying foxes. Coochie coo! I found this photo after listening to Science Friday today on the radio, a fascinating show w/ Dr. Shane Campbell Staton. 801AEDC4-1979-4CCD-9753-4EAA11E77EC4.jpeg

I was just going to say, flying foxes are definitely cute! Other bats don’t particularly take my fancy but I like flying foxes’ faces.

I am terrified of them but they are so cute!
They are scared of you too! Maybe they think you’re cute though. One way to think on it: they eat mosquitoes….even I can’t get fuzzy about those!

I'm one of those people who are absolutely terrified of bats. One day years ago, I was walking to work, and a little way in front of me I saw a bat drop straight down out of a tree. I was like "eeeeeewwwww!!!!" I've heard bats are actually flying mice and I'm terrified of those things too.

Well since I waited too long to edit, to clarify, I mean that bats are in the order Carnivora, although some only eat fruit or nectar. But most eat insects.

I love bats, I do bat monitoring during the summer to record what species we have around here.

Locally we have common pipistrelles, soprano pipistrelles, noctules, Daubenton's, and brown long-eared bats.

Oh my parents also have a large colony of soprano pipistrelles living in their roof, they make a bit of a mess but it is amazing seeing them all fly out at dusk to go and hunt insects. Here is one hanging onto the wall of their house.

About 25 years ago we rescued a baby bat (it was really small) who had flown into a house wall. We took it inside, laid it on the kitchen table to check if it was injured. It was fine, only a little shocked, but in about 15 minutes it was ready to fly again.
What I remember is its incredible cuteness and the softness of its coat, I couldn't help stroking it.
