So tonight poor Peanut .. I got her some toys .. she had no idea what to do with them !! aww... I had to show her who to play with them ! she was scared at first and really didn't to . I got a mouse , and it squeaks; I let her be , and went to lay on my bed and watch tv. I heard the squeaking in the kitchen LOL ..she was playing a little when no one was watching . I smiled and realized she just had to try it once I was gone . I dont think she has ever had a toy before !! I also called a 24 HR . vet line I have access to; I told them I think she is really hungry. I was feeding her a " normal" amount of food, but she is still lacating ( she has milk in her that has not yet dried up, even tho her kittens have all been adopted and she was spayed this week ) how much should I be feeding her ? My vet cant see her until 21st for her initial visit ( booked into Sept ..unless I have emergency) .. and I want to be sure I am not UNDER or OVER feeding her .. they told me to give her about 3X what I am giving her , for now , then the vet will put me on taper schedule . Lactating Queens have high calorie needs , so she IS hungry .. but once the milk dries up , and her hormones settle , that will decrease; Poor girl..was hungry ! would have been nice if the shelter gave me any info to go on. they hand you a bag of food .. a sample bag and coupon at that .. wish you well, and send you on your way. I had noticed she seemed really famished, and followed up on it myself. Sheese ! she seems better now that she is eating a little more... we'll figure this out , kiddo. Poor thing..what a life she must have had !View attachment 390736
What a great meowmy she has now though!
Yuki (my husband's cat) didn't know how to play or jump when we first got her. The previous owner didn't let her up on furniture even and we had to teach her how to climb the cat tree and come back down.
It's like a little miracle when they first play.

Since she is lactating, feed her as much as she will eat, preferably a high-quality wet food, and/or a high-quality wet kitten food. You can supplement with a high-quality dry food but it should not be a cat's primary diet. There are many opinions and preferences as to kinds and brands; I'll just say I feed Blue Buffalo and Soulistic, available at Petco.com and Petco stores.

Thank you for input !! This 'vet line" actually had me talk with a LVT (which is NOT a vet) who said straight dry food is fine, but I can give wet food if " I want to " .. I dont think straight dry is good. They gave me Science diet from Shelter , so I went with it since I figured if that's what she has been eating, I dont want to throw changes at her now , but I did add 2 portions of wet food a day as I know protein/ moisture are important ! she gravitates to it. She was acting anxious .. which I was attributing to her being new here, but some of it may have been that she was just hungry, too ! When Bella was getting sick, acting " restless " was a symptom. Peanut is much calmer now ! I had noticed her poo was kinda dry/hard on just dry food.. added the wet food ..much better now. She is drinking water , but they need the fluids! Her boo bees are still full, and have not gone down yet, so I am going to just let her eat until I see them smaller. I see her lying on my kitchen floor..which is cool linoleum .. I figure it is soothing . she likes sleeping on the back of our sofa , right by the A/C .. I told my hubby .. maybe she has hot flashes... I can relate ! LOL .. had a hysterectomy in 2013( tumor) .. she gets my sympathy on that one :) Thank you for your input. My past kitties were spayed , but neither of them had babies first. This is new to me , but drawing on what little I know from human mommies ! appreciate the insite of those who know more than me !!

aww, poor kitties ! Funny you should mention the cat tree. My husband wants to go out today and get one ! she has something " fun" to climb on and a safe place to 'hide" in if the noises scare her . ( condo) instead of under my recliner. She can pretty much go anywhere she wants to .. sleeps on bed, etc.. the only place I dont like kitties is on the kitchen table since we eat there; otherwise, they can go where ever they want to. Yesterday, I was at the table, and didn't she jump right up on it . I gently said " no, no. Not on the table " .. and she jumped right off ! she really is a good girl :) made me wonder if she was abused at some point. I pulled a chair up next to me , and said " you can jump up here " .. and she did :) She is learning her boundaries , it seems she isn't use to kindness . She's learning :) sweet girl ! Thank you for sharing !

Here is cute pic of Peanut .. learning to play with a ball. She figured out the scratchy card board EZ enough ( center ) .. but didn't know you can play with the ball around it too. Ahh... such fun stuff to learn !!

Be careful if she gets behind your recliner. I have my dad's recliner and our beloved angel Tarifa used to hide in it by coming in from behind. You'll want to make sure she isn't in there before you sit in that and especially before you put up the footrest!!!

I always get my cats spayed/neutered right away. Your Peanut isn't having hot flashes from having been pregnant, I don't think; but she is probably uncomfortable if she still is lactating, and you're right -- she's probably more comfortable on the cool floor, especially now, in summer.

The wet food is good. Vets are like human-specific doctors -- they push what the dealers push on them. Science Diet is pushed by almost all vets, but I do not think it is high quality food at all and would never feed it. Since she is used to it, though, you're right again -- good idea not to change her food completely at this stage. When she's all settled and stops lactating, you can gradually reduce this and increase her wet food, and quality dry if you want, until the Science Diet is gone. Just my opinion. I am not an "authority" and you may wish to do something different. How we feed our cats is a very personal thing.

:thanks: agreed ! my recliner is electric , so I have not been using it. I am afraid she will get caught in the mechanisms if I turn it on ! so I may sit in it , but dont recline. unless she is on TOP with me ;) I am not a fan of Science Diet, either. They donate that food to shelters , to plug that product. Once she is feeling better, I will go with a better product . I have been giving her wet food , and some SD dry , to not make dramatic changes; She seems much better already ! Thanks for input ..!!

I realized yesterday that I'll be picking up my little black cat on Friday the 13th. Love it!
We are experimenting with some different names, but I also like Coal. Sort of making the list and waiting for the weekend. Currently cleaning the master bedroom to make it more safe for him.
Pretty excited!

Envy is not a positive emotion, but I am excited for you! There's a famous Coal, of Coal and Marmalade fame.

aw, Thank you ! and I have to say, seeing my husband snap out of his depression over losing Bella, best treat of all. One of my coworkers surprised me yesterday with a little gift for Peanut. at change of shift as I was leaving, she handed me package with 3 little catnip mice ; She said " I got this for your new kitty; " now, this nurse is allergic to cats, and doesn't own any but was so sad for me when Bella died ...happy to hear we got Peanut.. anyway, I brought them home .. and this little girl went to TOWN on those toys ! When I got up this morning , my husband said " I had fun last night . Stayed up all night watching her attack those mice. She was cute as Hell. We had a blast !" The first I have seen him happy since Bella died . We defiantly did the right thing getting her so soon. Thank you all for your support with that decision. :lovecat2:

oh, boy.. well, just a call from the vet. Bella's remains are in and I can go pick them up. I will be glad to have her back home with us, but it will be sad to get her . the reality that she is now ashes.. :sniffle: . Having Peanut will take the edge off it , as she does make us smile. I will always miss my Bella ...💔. Still, I have no regrets about getting little Miss Peanut. 💝

I find the memorial stuff to be sad and comforting at the same time. The hardest part is getting it I think. Once it's part of your space it is nice as a memorial. Give peanut an extra hug and tell her about Bella today. Might help.

Our physical bodies wear out and we leave them behind. Our souls are eternal. Bella will always be with you, watching over you. And you will be together in due time. Do not doubt it.

well, I got Bella's remains. It was not as bad as I thought. I am glad to have her home with us. A sense of closure . She belongs here , home. :whitecat:💕 Thank you for all your kind words and support. What could have been a hard day, was much easier. My brothers girlfriend said " Bella's spirit will come play with Peanut" when I came home, Peanut was under my Bed ( one of Bella's favorite places ..and I have not seen Peanut there before ) I had cleaned out under there and mopped before we got Peanut, (or so I thought!) as I didn't want all the smells of Bella to scare a new kitty; didn't I find her playing with an old Bella Toy ! thought I had found them all and tossed them ! ( except for her 2 favorites .. which I keep in my dresser ) .. maybe Jill is on to something LOL ... Bella showing Peanut her old tricks ..oh, boy ! :whitecat: 💕:silver:
