I'm trying to figure out how to wear a mask going in public. Starting tomorrow we have to start wearing one when going in public. I have problems breathing with those things on and my head is kind of funny shaped that a mask either covers my eyes or whatever. So I don't know. Mom refuses to do delivery because people will kill us (her words not mine). Any tips on how to wear one? BTW: I'm claustrophobic as well so the mask wearing doesn't help and I can't sew one due to severe nerve damage and sever frozen shoulder. Ugh

Suggestions or videos would be greatly appreciated as we HAVE to start wearing them in my area.
Do you have a bandana that you can tie around your lower face? If not cut up a cloth shirt or whatever you have and make one. All you need is something square, big enough to fold diagonally into a triangle and tie it in back.

Thank you. Yes I can. That looks pretty good. Will look like a 2 year old did it but as long as it does it's job I don't care.
We had to make a grocery store trip today, our first wearing a mask (homemade). I felt kind of goofy in it, but more than half the shoppers were wearing some kind of mask. No one is paying attention anymore since so many are wearing them now.

Jem Jem that’s very simple and creative. Thanks for sharing!

I also found this...It seems like it would be a little stuffy, but if it's not for all day wear, it shouldn't be so bad.

Am I wrong for not wearing a mask when I go out? I don't see the point if it isn't protecting me against anything... am I wrong?
They don't protect the wearer unless the wearer is wearing an N95 or N99 mask, which they are not selling to the public but saving for the health care personnel. The principle behind everyone wearing a mask is that it shields others from the droplets we all release into the air when coughing, sneezing, or even talking, and as there are undoubtedly many people who are asymptomatic carriers, it protects others from getting the virus.

They say it does help...It's all up to your risk tolerance. I haven't been wearing any but I'm also okay with getting it and letting it run its course.
kittyluv387 kittyluv387 Trust me on this. You are NOT okay with getting it. No one knows how the virus will affect anyone getting it. Age, health, diet, lifestyle are NOT guarantees of being asymptomatic or guarantees as to what form the virus will take if a person gets it. Time and again there are confirmations of this. Some people have no symptoms at all. Some very healthy/young/strong people get it and die. NO ONE should want to get this virus. NO ONE should try to get it.

LOOKS DON'T MATTER. SURVIVAL DOES. And not getting it does.

BTW: did anyone see this? Just what I don't want my Mom to see on the news of the tiger having Covid 19.

Bronx Zoo tiger tests positive for coronavirus
Yes, I did. Several animals at the facility are presumed to have it. Safety protocols are being followed and both the person who probably infected them, as well as the animals, are said to be doing well and expected to recover.

I'm definitely not trying to or wanting to get it. But we're trying to flatten the curve rightly for the sake of medical professionals and people who need medical attention at this time. We are much too late in hoping to eradicate this. I accept this and I accept that most people are likely to get it than not. I like to travel and I like going to a lot of popular restaurants. I'm probably going to get it so when it happens it, it happens.

EVERYONE should look at the videos NY Governor Cuomo's brother, Chris Cuomo, has made. He is relatively young, has no underlying health problems that I know of, and is currently battling COVID-19. He talks quite candidly about his own experience:
and in another video he pays tribute to another relatively young man:
PLEASE WATCH THESE VIDEOS, especially if you think it's no big deal.

I thought a mask wouldn't help either, I've been living in Asia for 5 years and the only time I'd wear a mask was when the pollution was in the maroon levels. But every day as this was happening, more and more people put on masks. Now 99.5% of people are wearing masks all day, every day here. I don't think formal studies were done, but common wisdom has shown that it reduces chances of transmission, even if it's just because it makes people more aware. I have heard a lot fewer coughs on the train these days because everyone's being mindful and not wanting to be "that person." I didn't know this, but I guess Hong Kong and Singapore attributed much of their SARs recovery to wearing masks. I wish I would have known that sooner, because I always thought masks were just for sick people to be polite.

Well, I used to be quite a party girl and I've always loved going out, including to restaurants. But that's during life as usual. This is NOT life as usual. Please watch the two videos I just linked to.

Omg I cant imagine you being a party girl lol! But it really is not the case that I'm taking it lightly. Trust me I have never referred to it as "just a flu." It's just acceptance at this point. And I don't expect it to be pleasant because even when I had just a flu I would suffer so much. I will watch the videos though!

I've lived quite a few different lives, and credit having a lot of experiences for informing me pretty well. When your elders and "betters" tell you what they've done and what to do/not to do, it's pretty natural to think you're not them, and your experiences may not be like theirs. So having your own makes you really "get it".
Thanks for watching the videos. They really helped me to "get it" because I thought a lot like you before I saw them.

I feel really bad for that doctor's husband. But yes being a cancer survivor seems to be an extreme risk. This isn't the only case with cancer survivors dying. It's very sad since it's true they already fought their battles and won. And as for me I know I wont be as lucky as Cuomo with people helping me out since I don't have an important last name! I believe him when he says he's suffering. I'm not extroverted but I do like to travel sometimes and I definitely enjoy restaurants. I also work at a large institution. I don't expect to not get it. It is what it is. I just hope I can get through it in one piece in the end if it does happen.

I understand your thoughts. I'm determined not to get it because I am ground zero for my cats. I have done everything possible to protect them "no matter what" but bottom line, they need ME and they need me well and strong. That always makes the biggest difference in any situation for me.
