It's however many you can handle. Or more specifically, how many your other cat(s) will let you have.
They are beautiful. I would have more, except, well, like I said.
Thank you! I'm glad mine all get along, aside for the occasional tussle.

The maximum allowable cats is:
  1. The number legally allowed in a household where you live and,
  2. The number you can afford to feed and provide medical care for and,
  3. The number the cats in your household will coexist with.
For me that is three in the home (although only two are mine). But that's because a certain little princess..... Look how innocent she looks.....

Won't tolerate any other cats.

We had someone bring over a kitten a while back just to see how it went. That little innocent child above hid in her cat tree for 24 hours and refused to move, eat or drink anything. Even though the kitten was in the home for 15 minutes and left as soon as Rocket showed distress. Rocket is also extremely bossy and territorial. Link has brought home strays, yes my other cat loves other cats, she will hiss at them to go away and yell at Link for the rest of the day.

I have 3 and feel that it's too many for us. But sometimes we feel that 3 is fun! But next thing you know someone puked, is constipated or has to go to the vet. But I do have 1 cat who has a lot of health issues so I think that makes it feel like we have even more cats. And apartments only allow 2 max so we are breaking rules. The third one was my ex neighbors. She didn't have room for her in her life anymore. And she's honestly a very affectionate cat. If we didn't take her in she would have been euthanized because she actually tested faintly positive for FELV on the snap test. We got that resolved with a lot of time and expensive tests. Something that most places don't have resources for.

How can you say no to this face??

How many your place will allow is a good point. I didn't think of that since I own my home out in the middle of nowhere in a county with no restrictions.
Samai is my problem. She allows her sister, but would kill another cat. (and then probably eat it). Maybe in 5 years or so, when she gets older...

The right answer as stated above - how many you can afford, how many are legal and how many will be accepted. I have WAAY over the legal limit for the county but they don't check unless someone complains. We own so there is no landlord. We are to the limit financially. (9). Two were were supposed to be only for 2 or 3 months from 2 people who became homeless but it has been over a year so they are ours.

My wife and I have our 5(now indoor) ferals. We have room enough, and can care for this many. Could we have more? Probably, but the question would be acceptance by the others.

Five? That's kids stuff :p (Just kidding you know).

We have 9 indoors, separated into two colonies. The colony of 3, I'm desperately wanting a kitten but wife keeps going :angrywoman::bat:
She's smarter than I am and I know it. We don't need another cat, we have plenty of animals here now. Everyone gets along well so we don't want to tempt it.
But then I see a picture of a little kitten wrapped in a purrito blanket, dozing with that cute little sleepy mouth and pink little nose and the more logical part of my brain turns into cheese.

Mine too!

This little one stops me though, shes already on medication for anxiety and doesn't need more stress in her little life.

Same here, and my wife keeps reminding me of that. We don't have any cats on anxiety meds, but we have a few that aren't exactly "Welcoming" to a new kitten or cat, and one of them we're worried about with age, health history, etc., so for now I'll have to just wrap little Baby Girl up in a towel and haul her around like a Purrito. (She doesn't mind. She actually loves this.)

The hard part is my boy would absolutely love a whole litter of kittens to play with. He'd be an amazing foster dad kitty to orphans.

I'll have to try the purrito trick on my Mom's cat. He loves snuggling in blankets.

We have a dog or two that thinks bottle kittens are heaven sent. :cloud9:
I could NOT find Baby Girl yesterday, I searched and searched, called my wife ("are you SURE she didn't sneak out the back door??") and then saw this thing. This blanket thrown on our couch like it always is, with this little tiny lump underneath it. Fireplace is going like crazy a few feet away.
I lift the blanket. She raises her head, bleary eyed and blinks, and I stick my hand under the blanket. Must have been 95 degrees.
I have no other idea except when she was little, we always (daily, multiple times) would wrap her up in a blanket and hold her. She loves being cuddled, held, wrapped up (on her terms...she's still a cat :flail:) and will burrow under blankets on her own if she's cold and be 100% invisible.
I really think she'd enjoy a playful kitten, because she hasn't slowed down since the day we found her years ago. She plays like a 3 month old kitten and I think she'd like the friendship. But what if I'm wrong?

Ours have the run of the house, except for the basement and attic, so they would have to play well with any new additions.
