good afternoon! :hellocomputer:

apple season has begun here!!! :cloud9: it was an unusual spring and summer here, with a very cool beginning, drought until around mid-summer, and then finished off with a pattern of repeated heat waves followed by raining. so how the apples fared through all of that, we'll have to see.

with apples on my mind......

What is your favorite type(s)/variety(-ies) of apple?

i'll start!

i love the crisp and juicy apples. :yummy: favorites of mine are Stayman, Braeburn, Cortland, and Macoun. but i also love Honeycrisp, and Ginger Gold. Cameo is good too! i even like early Macintosh apples -- when they're more crisp.

How about you?

Fuji. Honeycrisp comes in a distant second. My favorite of all time is a Winesap, but they have a lumpy appearance and aren't deemed the typical apple shape enough to market. They are grown in the Shenandoah Valley, and you can still get them in Virginia.

Yep, me too. Fuji only. Braeburn and Gala are acceptable but not as good as Fuji. I find Honeycrisp to be too sweet and not apple-y enough. But still acceptable.

What I can't stand is a mushy apple, like Red Delicious. Nope. It has to be crisp AND have a good flavor.

DreamerRose DreamerRose - I'm with you - Winesaps are ugly until you taste them, After that, who cares what they look like?

I am not really that familiar with apple varieties so I know what I dislike more than what are my favorites. I don't care for Red Delicious, they are such a pretty apple but I don't care for them. I like mixing Granny Smith with another variety for baking but they are a little too tart to eat out of hand. I think for eating out of hand my favorites are Braeburn or Gala.

I like a combination of Braeburn, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith for pies and crisps.

I was so envious of a neighbor years ago whose parents sent her a crate of Winesaps from Virginia. Imagine - a whole crate!

Wikipedia says they are a very old variety of apple. I guess when the trees all die, there won't be any more Winesaps. :(

I like Braeburn, Fuji, Cortland, Gala. Jonagold are pretty tasty too. I'm not sure if I've tried Jazz. I'm going to have to look for it though. It sounds delicious.

your favorite is Fuji, with Honeycrisp coming in a distant second!!! yummy!! :D

i think i've had Fuji before -- i've probably had most varieties at this point. i'm not sure i've had Winesap apples, though.

appearance is far overrated, in my opinion. but i do think most people do buy based on appearance these days. there's a big local apple and produce stand in my area, which sells bushel bags of 'seconds' (little imperfections) apples (a mix of apple varieties in each bag) for a very reasonable price -- $8.50 per bushel bag, if i remember correctly. that's what i buy, and have always been very pleased with the apples. and too, when i bought the Golden Jubilee tomatoes almost two weeks ago, no one else bid on them (at the local produce auction). they tasted really very good, just yellowish-orange in color. :agree:

Fuji is your favorite, Braeburn and Gala are acceptable, while Honeycrisp would...do in a pinch!!! excellent choices!! :)

some apples are crisp when in-season, fresh, but once they've been in 'cold storage' they become, less desirable in various ways. that's the way macintosh apples are for me -- i love them fresh and in-season, but never when it's not apple season.
