Well i have to say this has been going my whole life, in regards to my grandparents. My grandma (mums mum) is a pensioner, and has been on her own 4 years now. She gives us wonderful presents. She manages to find that something special as new. She also loves going to op shops, and she has found beautiful furniture and decorations that look brand new, but for alot less. I have had jewellery and vases and alot of gorgeous things from her which don't cost an arm and a leg. She doesn't have alot of people to buy for.
My nana and papa (dads parents) are also pensioners. Now i know it is harder for them as there are two people to feed, and papa has alot of health problems. My nana insists on getting presents for every grandchild and aunt and uncle that exists. I haven't been to her house for xmas since being with Tristan. I spent some 20 years going over there being ignored by one cousin who is always rude, obnoxious and flashing the expensive gifts his greek grandparents throw him. Getting lectures from christian relatives. Not to mention how horrid it actually is to squeeze 15 or so people into one dining room and nana insists on cooking up a huge fatty feast in the hot weather!
Oh yes onto the gifts lol. I haven't yet told my nana i dont want her to buy me anything, but as i havent been there for xmas in a few years, im assuming she's stopped buying me things. The worst give i got was a stinky $2 perfume and a magnet of a cat that said 'chin up'. Magnet was cute, sentiment wasn't.
It would be better for her to save her money and keep it for herself. I can't think of anything memorable in my lifetime from her, and id rather not get anything at all. She has never in my life actrually asked what i like or what i want, she has no idea what hobbies and things im interested in. But shes somehow managed to buy really cool and costly presents for the other cousins and family.
