So my 4 year old's cat fur quality seems to vary a lot? One part of the day it's super soft, a few hours later, it becomes a bit rougher, then the next hour, it could be super soft again, and other times it's extremely soft to the touch.

What causes this variation throughout the day?

My guess would be humidity. If it's drier in the house or where the cat was sleeping it could make the fur dried out and feel a bit rough. Once the cat moves into a more humid area and/or grooms themselves to help spread the natural oils in the fur it should feel softer again.

One of my girls has a coat like this while the other does not. It’s incredibly weird to me and I don’t know what it’s about either. I do know if I groom her with a furminator her coat will soften up for a day or two.

Cats are much softer right after they give themselves a bath! Their fur gets rougher and a little spiky looking when it’s greasy, grooming removes the dirt and distributes the oil throughout their coat to make it much softer
