What breed might my cat be? European shorthair?

Hello! I stumbled onto this site just today, and it seems just delightful! I have always been a little shy about online interactions, but the people here seem so sweet... As beffiting of fellow car owners and lovers, truly. So, I decided to risk asking a question :3

In any case - l ways terribly curious as to a mix of what breeds my domestic cat might be - I picked him up as a kitten at a shelter in a city in northeastern europe. All I know is that he should at least partially be a standard European shorthair.

As a kitten, he had dark brown/black markings on top of his head and nowhere else, but those faded with age, and now he is all white.

He is a born hunter, and has hunted down all the mice in our basement. He's not too friendly, skittery around strangers (though that might be a socialisation issue rather than character), doesn't enjoy being pet/handled that much, and his purrs are REALLY quiet, but he allows household members to carry him, is pretty patient with adults and kids alike, and hates to be alone - he always sleeps in a room some member of the family is in - he prefers my sister and mom.

In one of the pictures he is a bit chubby, but it isn't recent, and he's much healthier now - blame grandma haha. Sorry if there are too many pictures! I added them and wasn't sure on how to remove them...

What a gorgeous boy :heartshape:

He would be classed as a solid white domestic shorthair. Most cats are domestics and not any particular breed or mix of breeds. Yours is a little beauty though

The black spot he had on his head as a kitten is called a kitten cap. It common in solid white cats as the white color gene is actually a masking gene. Basically, the white is masking his true color. He could be a black or tabby cat under that white. Just a fun fact for you :)

He must be a constant groomer to keep such a beautiful clean coat. Could you describe the texture of his fur?

I see! That is an interesting fact, and super neat to know! Thank you for taking the time to make strangers on the internet (me haha) happier :redheartpump::redheartpump::redheartpump:

Thank you for noticing he tries his best to clean himself all of the time indeed - he is one pretty boy, and must be intending to stay as such in everyone's eyes. Not that i would love him any less, regardless of how he looks :happycat:

Also, I'm sure the cleanliness of his fur can be attributed to the fact that he is mostly a housecat, with acces to our garden as an outside area only! It does, however, still have a lot of things to get dirty in, such as thegreenhouse and flower garden, in the soil of which he loves to lay in summer, but has to clean up thoroughly after - takes a day or two.

Your question also had me searching through google for cat fur texture descriptions XD, and for a lack of a better term found - its really soft and fluffy, almost cloud-like on his belly and neck, and a tiny bit more, hmmm, oily (not the right word haha, really just less soft and more shiny/smooth of a texture, we joke that its from all the love and attention he is getting via pats) on his head and back. Hope that answers the question :)

The reason I asked was that his fur resembles that of boys. Particularly Jackpot. Both of my boys are Purebred Turkish Van's. Their coat feels like a "Cashmere Sweater ". The whiteness of their coat is pure white. Angelic maybe.

Interesting! It does sort of have a cashmere-feel to it, now that you mention it. I took a closer look at your profile picture, and if those are your babies, then you are one lucky cat owner, as they are really pretty, and must be a delight

Yes they are. Miles is the Black/ White he now is almost 4yrs. He's the quiet one. His coat is really fluffy. Jackpot is the Red/White. He's about 2.5 yrs. He's the talkative one. Very personable. He's the dominant of the two. I got both boys in 2019. Miles was 10 months and Jackpot was 3 months.

It seems like i forgot to mention, but i got mine all the way back in 2013 - he turns nine this summer, but his act hasn't changed from his younger days at all, mabe only becoming more patient. Hoping your boys grow up just as healthy as mine, as it seems i don't have to worry about their happiness :salam:

There is that outside possibility that your boy could have TV Gene's. I believe theirs a TV breeder somewhere in Germany.

Ooh, I'll have to look into that! Regardless of whether it is related to my baby or not in the end, it will probably be an interesting thing to look into. Thanks!

He would be a domestic short hair. Some shorthairs can just be a bit fluffier but still are not considered a long hair. Van pattern would require that the black stayed but he's all white now. So I would say just a stunning white DSH with probably little to no breeds in him.

Duly noted! Beeg thanks for the info - as far as I know and some others have commented, you are right on the money with that statement :D

In any case, i still love my little furball for being exactly the way he is, and asking you guys this question just made that even clearer. Thank you and have a nice day!
