My cat is a cross. He is a domestic short hair cat on vet's paper. I am just wondering what breed he might have. I was told his mother is a beautiful white cat, but his father is unknown. Can anyone help?

I would describe your beautiful cat as a black domestic longhair! I'm not sure why your vet would have him written down as a shorthair, as he appears to have luxurious long hair 
Most cats are not any particular breed, and are also not "mixes" or "crosses" of breeds (unlike dogs); the vast majority of cats are simply domestic cats without breed ancestry.
