I am not catholic and I have never observed Lent. But today at work we were discussing it and the guy I work with is giving up cigarettes (really he decided to stop smoking the day after Super Bowl) and I decided that I am going to give up cigars, whiskey, and peas.I just hope I can make it!

Aren't you supposed to give up something you enjoy? I understand peas as a vegatable, it just struck me funny when you were listing tobacco and alcohol then......"peas."Originally Posted by squirtle
Peas the vegetable....
I HATE peas!
I've tried to do this very thing for the past several Lenten Seasons. One year I made a vow to really love my neighbor. To be completely non-judgemental and accepting. It changed my life.Originally Posted by rapunzel47
As Ashley says, certainly Catholic, but not only Catholic. I do observe this (Anglican) but I find it useful not to think of it as plain denial of something, but rather self-discipline -- which can include denial, of course, but doesn't necessarily. It's a lot of years since I stopped giving up some favourite treat -- that being the usual sort of thing -- and began using this as a way of being intentional about changing some habit, behaviour, attitude that I'm not happy about in myself.
My husband, who is actually somewhere between agnostic and atheist, but sings in our church choir (where we met 30 years ago), used to joke that he was giving up Lent for Lent. It was soon pointed out to him that if he did that he would have to give up all the scrummy music we get to sing!He gave up THAT idea in a hurry.
Seriously, though, I've found it can be a very positive experience.
Don't worry about it...we will.Originally Posted by dawnofsierra

Although I realize it does no good whatsoever but to cause stress, I am a chronic worrier, and it's something I need to work on. So, if any of you guys hear me worrying the next 40 days, do remind me of this!

You're right! It is early -- pretty much as early as it gets. But look at it this way -- it'll all be over that much soonerOriginally Posted by eburgess
