Background: My 2 yo male was recently treated for tapeworms. He had gradually over the course of several months lost 1 pound (previous weight was 10.1 and dropped to 9.1). It was not noticeable to us at the time as his eating, litter box habits, and other behavior etc. was normal. He still had his normal fat pad on his belly so he appeared to be the same size but clearly he had slowly been losing weight. Vet discovered it was tapeworms causing weight loss. He was prescribed profender.
Tapeworms are now gone (and yes, he is also treated for fleas monthly). Vet is not concerned about other possible health conditions. Vet says that weight gain back to his previous weight will be slow so be patient and it's not necessary at this time to change his diet to make him gain faster. We free feed dry kibble and give wet food or canned salmon once daily. He eats until he's full and nibbles throughout the day (with a bit leftover each morning so he isn't being restricted from eating in any way. This is how he's always been). He continues to be playful, happy, and loving.
My question: do any of you have experience with weight gain in your kitty? How long should I realistically wait to see movement on the scale? Using a baby scale he's been 9.1 lbs every day for a week so far after tapeworm treatment. Any insight is appreciated! Thank you!
