Do you like to sing? Are you comfortable singing in front of people?
I used to NEVER sing, nobody could make me do it because I was embarrassed. My mother told me when I was a kid that I couldn't sing, so I was mortified to even try! I played musical instruments well enough but thought there must be something wrong with my voice.
As I got older, I could no longer play wind instruments, but really wanted stay involved in music, so I started practicing when I was alone. I signed up with a private teacher (took me 3 lessons before I would sing for her!) who told me my voice had a 3-octave range, and the lessons gave me some confidence. Now I sing all the time when I'm alone and have even started joining in sometimes when others are singing.
(I found out a couple of years ago that my mother told ALL of her kids when we were little that we can't sing just to keep us quiet - she thought if we weren't good singers we would embarrass her. Such a shame to steal such a joyous gift from your children!)
