About 2 years ago my cat Moses had a severe blockage that he almost died from. He literally went from playful and healthy to almost dead overnight. The blockage resulted in a torn urethra, and he also had bladder stones that he needed emergency bladder surgery from. It took about 3 months for everything to clear up completely, and until the very end of it all, we were never sure if he was going to live through it. He's been doing good since then, but we were told that if this happens to him again, he probably won't survive it again. He's been on a diet of Royal Canin SO and doing well, but I'm still really paranoid about him, so while I don't follow him around 24/7, if I happen to see him going to the litter box I'll follow him to make sure that he's peeing.
So tonight he ate dinner, and then wandered over to the litter box and I followed him. He squatted for a little bit and his tail quivered a little like he was peeing, but when he stood up there was absolutely nothing there. So I immediately tossed him into a carrier and headed to the emergency vet hoping that I caught it early enough this time to be able to save him.
At the vet she felt his bladder and said that it actually felt empty, and she wasn't able to get a urine sample. So she thinks that he may just have a UTI right now that is making him feel like he has to pee. However, since he had the urethra tear last time, she's slightly concerned that his urine might be draining into his abdomen, which is why his bladder feels empty, but she felt around and pushed on everything and he just purred through it all. She said he wouldn't be purring like that if he was in pain. And I know cats can purr when they're nervous, but I've heard Moses cry in pain before, so I agree that he wouldn't be purring if what she was doing was bothering him.
So since everything about him is completely normal, other than the fact the he apparently can't pee at the moment, she sent me home with some antibiotics and told me to bring him to my regular vet tomorrow to assess if anything has changed or not. The emergency vet here isn't a 24 hour vet. They are only open when the other vets are closed, so if I had left him there over night I would have had to drive for an hour at 6am tomorrow to pick him up and then bring him to my regular vet. She did say to come back tonight if I notice anything going downhill very quickly.
So right now he seems ok in general, but because of how bad this got last time, and because of the very large chance that he wont survive it if its gets bad again this time, I am a nervous wreck. He's been doing so well, so this just can't happen to him again
. I'm really scared right now. So if you could keep him in your thoughts and prayers I would really appreciate it.
