I feed my cats raw twice a day at 12pm and 12am. on Thursday Zelda ate her first meal at 12pm, then at 8pm she vomited big time and it smelled really bad. At 12 am she refused to eat. I got worried because she always has a huge appetite, so much that I have to feed her in a crate so she can't steal from the other cats. I offered her some rotisserie chicken, seafood flavored fancy feast, and even some kibble. When she refused everything I syringe fed her some water. I set up the guest bathroom for her so I could monitor any litter box activity or vomiting overnight. After I set he up in the bathroom I found 2 small diarrhea spots on the floor in my walk in closet. I went to check on her one more time at 3am and syringed some more water and afterwards she took a few bites of kibble. I checked on her around 9am Friday morning and she had some diarrhea and pee in the litter box, and some vomit on the floor.
We took her into the vet Friday afternoon and had an x-ray done. The x-ray showed some bone fragments clumped in her intestines and a bit of gas, but the vet said it looked like it should pass. They gave her subcutaneous fluids, an anti-nausea injection, and sent me home with some sucralfate tablets.
She hasn't vomited since Friday morning but she is still having diarrhea, and is not eating on her own. She has long fur so I had to cut off a lot of poop covered fur from her rear and gave her a bath this morning when I got up, she immediately had some more diarrhea after her bath and got more poop on herself, but I just wiped it off with a baby wipe and "rinsed" with a warm washcloth. I have been force feeding her a few tablespoons of chicken baby food mixed with every 4 hours. After starting on the baby food she had some more diarrhea but it was a little thicker. I plan on taking her back to the vet on Monday for another x-ray and blood panel if she is not eating on her own by then.
Getting her to take the sucralfate has been difficult. The first time I dissolved it in water and syringe fed it, and she did not put up a fight. I tried that again but she struggled a bit and drooled a LOT. So this morning I just took the tablet and quickly put it at the back of her tongue and she swallowed it before she knew what had happened, but I am not sure it will be so easy the next time.
She has been eating raw food for over a year now and has never had constipation or diarrhea. She does have regular vomiting due to hairballs and sometimes from getting into human food. Recently one of my dogs has been finicky about his food (kibble) and has not been finishing his meals. Sometimes my husband lets him out of his crate but does not check his bowl so it is possible Zelda had gotten into his food, she has been known to take naps in his crate. The dog food is Farmina N&D Grain Free Chicken. Could the dog food cause illness for a cat? Maybe a hairball caused a blockage? She has been shedding tons lately, every time I brush her it seems like the fur is never ending.
Is there anything else I should do for her? Anything I should ask the vet about?
