vet mistaking sex of cat?

Sexing in young cats is often difficult sometimes. My cat's name is Sassy, when I got HIM I was told by the humane society that it was a she so I named her Sassy. Sassy was about 10 weeks old at that time. When I took her to the vet to be spayed at about 5months I was informed that they would be neutering him...By this time Sassy was use to his name and it suited him...However over the years most people think he is a female because of his name. However Sassy is a fluffy cat so it was hard to tell. Linus my other cat is short-haired and it was pretty obvious what he was before his day at the vets.
