Dear Forum Members:
I wanted to thank everyone that gave me suggestions on how to feed my Persian Cat that has been unwilling to eat or drink since 3-13-06. I started using the baby food meat - for 2month olds as it is pureed enough that they do not need to chew it. I was able to get about 1 Tbs down her twice a day with a small popsicle stick and feeding her to the side of her mouth. Then the water has been given with a dropper.
Yesterday I decided to take her to another Vet for another opinion as to why she would not eat now 17 days. She is thin and very fragile and I just felt that something else must be done.
He tested her for feline lukemina - it was negative, he tested her for diabetes and that was negative. He felt that her teeth had not fallen out like I previously thought. Then he gave her a mild sedative to look at the mouth and throat to see if an ulcer was in the throat. That was negative.
His conclusion was that it was a virus cats can catch that is in the air. Like the flu virus. Since cats eat 99% by smell and when they get these viruses they lose their smell, they lose all appetite. They will go the food and to the water and put their nose to it but then will walk away. They will feel better one day, and then go back down the next, not moving much and weak acting. They run a slight .5 temperature in the afternoon but have no temperature in the morning.
It will run its course and he felt she will recover and to keep hand feeding her and giving her fluids by dropper until she will eat and drink on her own.
Yesterday she acted like she was feeling better in the morning, then when I had her in the vet in the afternoon she was weak.
He also felt that older cats can sometimes lose their appetite and to begin giving her Pet Tonic- a vitamin liquid that will increase her appetite, even though the other vet had given me Nutri-Cal a thick vitamin supplement which also helped her weather this illness. Surely, my baby would be dead by now if I had not insisted that she was going to eat, even if I had to force feed her, which I did.
The vet said whatever works on the baby food meat, since she would not chew.
So, thanks to the members that told me to keep hand feeding her, and to go to the baby food meat- she is on the road to recovery. I did not tell the vet that I had been treating her homeopathically for the 17 days and that I believe that this is why she was doing as well as she was.
