trying to cover food bowl

Recently, out oldest cat has taken to trying to cover the food bowl after he eats. We leave the bowl out all day with a little dry food and every morning I give them wet food. The bowl is shared by 3 cats, but since food is always available I don't think they mind. I was wondering why Zeppelin ha been trying to cover the food bowl as if he were in the litter box.

He's hiding it so nothing else will steal the food. Lots of cats make a few covering motions around the food dish wen they are finished eating, especially when there are leftovers.
