I posted a little while back about reintroducing my cats after a fight. Both were on gabapentin but it started to make one MORE anxious.
I talked to the vet and she is now on 25 mg of trazodone every 12 hours. It's been 3 days and it's a phenomenal difference. I'm able to have them hang out for more than 10 minutes at a time without this one (on trazodone) trying to attack the other.
But it seems like a low enough dose that she still eats and plays as well.
I'm still seeing a behavioral specialist vet in a about 10 days to make sure I smooth this out right.
But has anyone else had very positive results on trazodone?

Also unrelated, but during that appointment I requested labs and she is 11 with flawless labs and it's very exciting to see.

Hi, I haven't used Trazadone on cats by itself or long term. It has always been given in addition to the Gabapentin. But that is great if it is working. I think you will find some valuable information at the behavior vet.

As with humans, every medication affects each body somewhat differently. If the trazodone is doing the trick, GREAT!

I did a little checking, and came up with this from the VCA hospitals:

"Trazodone is not recommended in pets hypersensitive to it or those using MAO inhibitors. This medication should be used with caution in pets with severe heart disease or liver or kidney impairment. Pets with angle-closure glaucoma should not use this medication."

Further than that, have a discussion with your behaviorist. And do let us know how she's doing! OH, being a she, and should she be a breeding queen, trazodone can affect fetal development in cats.
