When I first started doing TNR, I ran into problems of the cats that had never been inside, even the friendly ones, not understanding what the litter box was for in my recovery area, a separate part of the house to which my own cats do not have access. Then, I had an idea.

I scoop one urine clump from my own cats' litter box and put it in the fresh box for the TNR cats. Since I started doing this, I have had 100% success with them using the litter box on the first try. The smell seems to tell them that that's what it's for.

I have often sopped up urine with a paper towel or scooped poop that was done outside the litter box and then buried it into the litter box. This too works like a charm.

I've mixed dirt from the woods outside into the litter, and that's worked for me.
