Did you know that that song is about the Black Plague? The original words (with explanation in parentheses) were:
A ring, a ring of roses (from the buboes that appeared first on the necks of victims)
A pocket full of posies (from the belief that wearing herbs would ward off plague)
Achoo! Achoo! (don't know when it became "ashes," although it may have been early on, as bodies were burned en masse)
We all fall down (everyone dies)
