It does sound as if this is stress related. You can try giving him 1-3 teaspoonsful of chamomile tea, up to 3 times a day. It will help calm him, and is far more gentle than most prescriptions. I would caution you to use commercially prepared Chamomile tea, as they are all German chamomile, which is both medicinal and safe for cats in proper dosages. The ENGLISH variety, which is often found in gardens, is useless medicinally and toxic to cats. You can find the tea bags in the coffee/tea aisle of your supermarket.

You can also try getting him more active if he will chase a toy or laser light. Some cats (like my own) groom excessivly from boredom or lack of activity.

bonepicker bonepicker - when was the last time your kitty had a complete blood work-up, vet visit/ well-check, etc.? I wonder if the thinning hair is a health-related issue.
