Oh, man. I have no self-control when it comes to my cats, pretty much my whole life is doing crazy things for my cats. XD

Some of the more ridiculous examples:

1. Was renting an apartment, took in a week-old kitten, became incredibly attached. Landlord said I couldn't keep the kitten -- too many cats. Talked to a realtor and managed to get a house with very reasonable monthly mortgage and no down-payment thanks to some awesome state program. So... yeah, I bought a house for my cat. XD

2. When I lived in Wisconsin, there were these amazing hand-made cat trees being sold by Exotic Cat Jungles. They're made by a local guy but sold in many of the pet stores in that area. They are the sturdiest things I've ever seen, and awesome for cats that love to run around and jump a lot. While I lived in Wisconsin, I bought one.

After I moved (11 hours away, mind you), I decided my cats really needed a second one. So next time I visited my friends, I decided I was buying another one of those cat trees. They come fully assembled, and I had a tiny Ford Escort. We barely, barely got the thing in, and I ripped one of my car seat cushions trying to get it out.

Worth it.

3. My cats became completely obsessed with the bed springs on the full-size bed in the guest bedroom. They ripped the fabric underneath and starting to pull out bits of stuffing everywhere. Only way to get it to stop, I figured, was to get rid of the bed springs.

At the same time, I also thought the cats needed some more vertical space in their lives.

So I lofted the bed. No bed springs needed anymore, and then they had another high up area they could play around in.

They seem pretty happy about this:

I guess when people talk about buying their cats a cat bed, this is probably not what they mean.

C Cataria Is that eight cats in your picture? That's the most I've ever heard of someone having.
It is indeed. I actually have ten cats (eleven until recently -- I lost one to liver disease recently, :( ). You see that tortie in the middle of the cat pile? It's her fault. I had a reasonable three cats, then she (a stray that had been living by my parent's house for almost two years) had two kittens and abandoned them. Kismet, the cat on the far-left of the picture, is the surviving kitten that I took in that made me buy a house.

Then I figured I might as well catch the mother (who we named Camo) and take her in, but didn't catch her before she got pregnant with another litter of six kittens. Was originally planning on finding them all homes but when I took them for all for their spay/neuter surgeries and had a quiet house for the first time in three months, I realized that I really enjoyed having them all around... so here we are.

It's always the Tortie's fault - unless you have a Snowshoe!

Oh hey, me too!

We were living in a rented house and, even though the landlady was very understanding about the feral colony we were caring for, we couldn't keep the cats safe. The house was too small for them to all be indoor only cats and there was no garden that we could cat-proof, so we bought a house with a big garden.

Now I live in a forest half way up the side of Mount Fuji. There are no proper roads here and we get snowed in every winter but never mind, the cats are so happy. All 22 of them.

:p

Norachan: thanks for taking such care of the cat colony that you have.
How hard was it to catch all 22 cats for transportation to your new home?

On occasions two for transport was two too many to organise... lol.
One day Simon almost got left in Auckland as I could not find him anywhere. My husband finally found Simon asleep in the igloo shelter when he came home from work. I'm guessing that is how Simon lost his first family... by sleeping through them calling him for the move. He is the easiest cat to transport as he sleeps stretched out on his back and occasionally will wake up and mew softly as if to say "are we there yet??" then go back to sleep. It is a 5 hour journey between our country home and Auckland city.

Chantelle has always been stressed traveling. I usually have a spare change or two of bedding for her. She needs to be able to see where she is going, with the window beside her partially down. To start with, she didnt mind too badly the 5 hour trip to the country but after two years she wearied of traveling and began to hide instead of getting into the car when it was time to go. One time as we were ready to leave our farm I had to go under their favourite play tree to find Chantelle. She was doing a quiet spot of bird watching with a Fantail dancing in the branches close to where she was sitting. I told her it was time to go. She stood up and smudged the branch next to her and walked out onto it purring and smudging, and squeaking "nah, nah... as if to say " I'm happy here and want to stay where I am...".
Both cats are happy on the farm which is our forever home. Simon follows me around on weed patrol, with tending his chookie friends and hangs around when we are working on home and farm development projects. With a cat like Simon who needs a dog! And he is better than a teddy bear too! Chantelle is content to be close to home.

Awww, they look quite at home on their tractor.

It took me over a month to get all the cats trapped and moved up to our new place. Luckily it was only a half hour drive away, so we could keep going back to get the stragglers.

There was one cat that I had been caring for for about five years. I saw her one afternoon when we had a car full of cats in carriers and no empty carry to put her in. I fed her and told her, "You stay here, we'll be back again tomorrow." but I never saw her again after that.

I went back every day for the first month, then a couple of times a week, then once a week but there was no sign of her. I hope someone took her in. She was a beautiful cat, long haired and friendly. She'd been spayed and vaccinated, so she wouldn't have had too much trouble being on her own.

I still go back there every few weeks, just in case.

:sigh:
