Stray Cats And The Flu And Then Recover?

Do stray cats come to you all stuffed up and dingy faced and one eyed pirate like and a week later they looks ok again? This one stray looked bad a month ago, yellow gunk tears, etc... then he looked great last week with clear eyes but today he comes around terrible again and even worse. My mom says it’s fights. Do cat fights produce like eye discharges? Can cat fights look like flu cat?

It could be that he is getting infection from either a deep scratch or bite wound that he's able to heal from, then gets in another fight where he's bitten again, gets an infection and the cycle repeats.
The infection, and depending on if the scratch or bite is close to a eye which would cause swelling also, could possibly cause the gunk.
