Hey, im hoping someone can give me some clue as to what is going on with my cats!
I have 2 female 3yr old spayed cats, theyre both in very good health, they are sisters and have always been together. They were never really bothered about interacting with each other and just seemed to tolerate eachother until about 2 months ago when they suddenly seemed to love eachother! they meow loudly to eachother constantly if one is out of sight, they cuddle up to eachother and sleep together which is sweet but they are just so needy. if one cant see the other her eyes go huge and she will yowl and yowl until the other replies and they are together again.
anyway, although odd, i saw no problem really with this behaviour until recently...
I live in a house full of animals, they all get on really well and ive never had any problems with agression before. Last week however my two cats did something ive never seen before, my dog was sleeping on the floor, and my cats walked into the room together, they looked at eachother, one let out a sort of 'yoooooooooooooowwwwwwm' sound and they both ran over to my dog, jumped on it and began to attack, and i mean REALLY viciously.
There was no warning whatsoever and no provocation on the dogs part. They have since done the exact same thing to my other dog and my other cats....yet if they are seperated there is no agression towards any of my other animals, only when they are together. Their clingyness towards eachother just seems to be getting worse and worse, if they arent together they seem to panic and i realy dont understand what is going on!
there have been no changes to my house whatsoever either and i cant think of anything that could have triggered this.
help!

Hi and welcome to TCS
....
I think they both need a thorough vet examine. If there is anything wrong with one, the other is going to react to this. It could be anything from sight, hearing, infection that's not obvious, other or none of the above. Best to check health issues of the possible reasons for their sudden behavior change.

I have done pet behavior consults for years and have never heard a tale like this. What would be ideal is if there is a pet behavior specialist in your area that can actually come into the home and perform a full-scale evaluation and case history before making any recommendations.

Whoa.

I started in on this story thinking I'd at least have some idea what to do on this one. But in all my years of experience I've never seen that. It might have even been due to boredom. What is obvious though is that these two cats are VERY close, and when one does something the other follows. So that's probably why they both attacked. It only took one to instigate it.

I'd definitely separate them from the poor dog, give it a little time and then reintroduce under supervision...close supervision.
