Hello all!
Everything has been going pretty well in the household now that we are about a year since we introduced the 2nd cat. The resident cat still shows dominance behavior like walking up and smacking the other in the face for no good reason. But they do chase each other around and play and hang out in the same rooms.

The one thing we have not been able to help is that every single time we try and give the 2nd cat a cat bed, the new one will take it over. And then 2nd cat will never use it again. For instance, we got this new cave bed. Encouraged the 2nd cat to lay in it. She did. And even slept in it one morning! The resident cat did go up and bat her at one point. That night, resident cat went to lay in it and this morning the 2nd cats refuses to go in it anymore.... we have lost 3 beds for the 2nd cat this way so far. And the resident cat has way more beds than she needs lol.

Is there a way to help the new cat reclaim territory? Or that’s just how it’ll be with them working our dominance?

Hi! A lot of people will tell "that is the way it is". But, when you've gone through 3 beds trying to get the 2nd cat to have her own bed, I think you need to intervene. Clean one of the beds so that it is scent free, place 2nd cat in it so that her scent is on it. Then, the minute the 1st cat gets into it, take her out, tell her no, and place her in one of the other beds. If she stays, even for a minute, give her a treat. If she gets out right away, put her back in it and then give her a treat before she can get out of it. Keep some spare towels on hand with the 2nd cat's scent on them, and place one in 'her' bed, and then place her in it, and give her a treat as well. This process will have to be repeated each and every time until resident cat 'gets the picture'.

The only other thing I know to suggest is to set up a space/place for 2nd cat's bed that 1st cat cannot get to. That could even mean using a collar chip to a cat flap that only the 2nd cat can access her bed behind a closed door.

I am hopeful other members will come along soon with some other ideas for you to try!

Thank you for the suggestions!! We will start treat training them today with the beds and hopefully 2nd cat can have her bed back!
