This past month has not been a stellar cat month for me. I lost the stray cat, Jasmine, to seizures and gave her kittens up to a foster. Then my Sammy had to be put down when the vet discovered he had a squamous cell cancerous tumor under his tongue. Last Saturday, someone ran over one of the stray cats in the neighborhood right in front of my house.
So, I still have two cats, Missy and Spot.
Missy is 18 years old. She is a creaking old lady cat. She's still eating and drinking and taking care of business, but I know each day I have with her might be the last.
Spot is about 10 years old. He was a cat who found me when he was about a year or so old. Very quiet, very calm, very slow moving sweet boy. After what unexpectedly happened with Sammy, I thought it best to take Spot to the vet for a wellness check. When I looked in his mouth, I found a HUGE mound of tartar covering his top teeth. It must have been hurting for sure. So, I decided to go for the dental work, too. It was not fair to him to suffer.
The good news on the blood work was that he is a healthy kitty. No issues or problems.
He was put out and had two teeth removed and the rest cleaned. Amazingly, the teeth under the tartar lump were okay. They gave me some liquid pain medication for three days. Last night's dose mostly did not make it in his mouth. I tricked him today, and he got it all.
I know his mouth hurts now, but in about a week, he is going to be one happy kitty. I felt guilty not thinking taking care of his teeth sooner, but at least I know he should be good to go for a while now. He loves to sit on my lap and loves to purr. His breath is so much better now, too.
It was a very costly vet visit, but I feel better and so will he.
