I've never experienced this particular pasttime (lol), but the one thing that comes to mind is that they think you're playing with them (think...moving around a cat toy...or when cats think your finger is a toy). How old is he?

YES!!
One of my cats, when she was a kitten... Oh man.... She practically took my eye out several times... I think they're trying to get at your eyelashes or something... Do you have really long eyelashes?

yes! she might think your challenging her as eye contacts threatening.

I flutter my eyelids in my sleep and woke up once with a start as my (then new and very tiny) kitten had nearly poked my eye out!

maybe its not the blinking. maybe your staring at her?

I've had little kittens swat at my eyes but I was quick to let them know that was inappropriate (usually I'd hiss at them and they'd get the hint to not do that again). As for a grown cat, oh my. I think I'd be worried to even go to sleep around it!

I would say as long as he isn't hurting you when he does this, you should just look at it as something funny he does. That's interesting that a cat his age is doing this...maybe he's just trying to connect with you. I think it's just one of those cute little quirks.
