I no longer have a job.
I was offered a nanny position and was supposed to start next Monday. The mother looked on my Facebook page and read all my status updates and found out that we were thinking of moving to Texas. She asked me about it and I told her that yes we were discussing it, but nothing was certain and if we did end up moving it wouldn't be for quite a while, probably close to a year. There is still so much for us to do. She said they needed to "think about it", but thanked me for being honest.
She contacted me today and said that they decided that they still wanted to extend an offer to me if I wanted it. I told her (this was in an email) that I still had a few questions to ask, and that I was on my way to pick my son up from school, but I would call her when I got home. I did, and I asked her what my pay rate would be b/c they never told me a final wage. I make around $10 per hour, and my last nanny position (3 years ago) paid me $9 per hour. At our interview they said they could pay me $8-9 per hour, which I said was fine. She said that they had been talking about it but hadn't decided on a wage yet, but she would let me know tonight or tomorrow. That made me a bit concerned, especially since we were getting so close to me starting. I did NOT expect what was coming.
She said that they would be willing to pay me $330 per week. For a 50 hour work week, that is broken down to $6 per hour for the first 40 hours and $9 per hour for the last 10 (and they said they may be late a couple-few days per week). That is 55 cents less than minimum wage here, and as a nanny/household employee I am entitled to minimum wage and it is illegal to pay me less than that.
Her reasoning?? B/c I may move someday and I won't work for them for years and years. She said they found security in knowing I would work for them for many years, but since I may move someday she couldn't justify paying me that much when there are nannies out there that she can hire for less. Needless to say I turned her down immediately.
*sigh* *bawl*
I have been unemployed since May. I have gone for countless interviews, for both nanny positions and CNA positions. This was the first job offer I have had. My husband seems so disappointed.
I have since deleted every mention of moving to Texas off of my Facebook page. I hope this doesn't come back to bite me in the butt the next time I go to get a nanny position. I have already reposted my ad on Craigslist for a new position. Hopefully something comes along soon.
