My 8-year-old tortie has been battling coughing, sneezing and a runny nose for a while now. I was prescribed Orbax, which worked for a while, but less and less each time it was prescribed again.

The last time (late August) she was prescribed Orbax again and this time Prednisolone, as well. Now she is making this horrible, loud snoring sound while wide awake and is breathing through her mouth. I took her in for x-rays and an exam of her soft palate for anything out of the ordinary, but everything is clear. I think it may be the anesthesia required for the exam, but she is not interested in eating, either. She come running when she hears her food or if I shake her treat container, but she sniffs the food/treats and walks away. Maybe she can't smell her food and that is why she is disinterested???

Has anyone encountered anything like this? I am concerned that the steroids caused a bad reaction, but I have no proof that this is the case.

Thank you for any thoughts!

I do know that often if a cat cannot smell its food, it will not eat. She needs to eat, if she is not then you need a vet visit soon.

Sometimes being in the bathroom with a hot shower running and the room all steamed up will help. maybe hold her, dont get her wet, just let her breathe in the steam and see if it helps?

I would want another vet visit, maybe a second opinion on her if it really sounds bad when she is breathing. Maybe allergies, maybe an infection, or something else?

Thank you for your thoughts on this! I have already tried the shower a few times with no results.

I am calling the vet today to see what else can be done, but I think a second opinion is in order soon.

Update: So the vet, who washed her hands of my cat and labeled her a puzzle, told me to go to a specialist.

The specialist, who was wonderful, did a CAT scan and nasal flush. He also sent out samples of her nasal passage to culture and see what the lab comes up with. He didn't find any tumors or fungal pockets, but he did find a thickening in the nasal passage.

I have had to hand feed my cat with an eyedropper because she still refused to eat, but she is now starting to eat a bit on her own (thank God!) and is taking her medicine well.

She's still making some snuffly sounds, but no more loud snoring. Waiting to hear back on the labs, but otherwise all is looking good.
