All 3 of my guys are on the SD r/d.. This is the only time Abbey has been able to loose any weight, from 23lbs down to 16 now! I am open to trying another formula, but can anyone suggest another food for overweight kitties? Royal Canin's website lists "Slim" for overweight cats, has anyone tried this?

Talk to your vet ... Unless 16 lbs is her ideal wt... there are many other rxs... I am sure slim is a good food but since the kittys are on rx talk to the vet...
Angel has been on S/D Food all his life (since I adopted him at 18 mos. old) and once he was diagnosed with MANY food allergies he's been on S/D Z/D diet.
I feel scared after reading this thread that I'm not doing the right thing for Angel. I, too, listened to my Vet who insisted this food was best for Angel.
Please don't tell me I'm hurting him in some way, I could never forgive myself. I hate that I read this thread!

Now hey there...if you read this thread, you saw my note about what a lifesaver Hills Z/D was for my Joshua, and Sharkey also mentioned it helping...my point was I may not like some of the ingredients, but if a prescription food is working and may be the only thing that has worked for a particular cat, why would you change?
So no, I don't think that you are hurting your Angel!

It's alright to question your vet but please listen to their advice. If you don't feel comfortable with the vet you are using you should find one that you do trust. I'm not trying to sound mean, I would just hate it for you to feel this way without consulting with him first. I have nothing bad to say about SD. I'm certain that if there was something seriously not right about that line of food, you would not see so many vet's carrying it in their office.

You're right, I just worry so much about doing the "RIGHT THING", ya know. Ya think you can trust your vet, or should I say, you Illusion that you can trust your vet then you hear stuff like this. Just makes you wonder that's all.
I truly do trust my vet though and know that Angel is completely, and has been, all his life with me. So somethings working right.
I feed my kitten Nepheline Hills Prescription diet P/D. Is the prescription diet the same as the science diet? The ingredients are different and look better than the SD. Opinions?

Yes, this is the same Hills I was referring to ...they have Science Diet, and their line of prescription foods. I am not a vet or vet tech, but this is a for growth food versus what say their z/d is prescribed for and which because it worked for myJoshua, I loved...this food is, imo, junk. I would NOT feed a food that uses the least quality protein source available - by-product meal, nor one that has as it's second most prevalent ingredient, ground whole corn, nor one that uses pork fat (pork is not recommended for cats as I understand). For a healthy, growing kitten that are foods out there with far, far superior ingredients!
I can give you some links later on carbs/food allergies and a source that discusses what is in pet food/definitions etc.
Reading all this, I think I will switch foods. At least the dry stuff right now anyway. Do kittens have to eat a food specifically for kittens? My local pet store carries the Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul and it seems quite good. But there is no specific kitten line. She is 3.5 months old by the way. Thanks for the advice.
They have the Kitten formula also.. But I feed a combo of both My Raggie Kitten Hershey will be 5 months on the 21st. And I feed Wellness and Fancy Feast wet twice a day.
I gave Nepheline a tiny bit of new food (Chicken soup stuff) and now she has had the runs today! She went 3 times today. So I don't think that food agrees with her... When will the new food get through her system? I'm worried about her now! I'm a very paranoid kitty owner!!! She is still acting normal, but won't eat very much. Thanks!
Hershey was like that also, after a week he was okay.

Yes, I barely gave her any of the new food. Maybe it was too much and too rich for her. Now she has had diarhhea 4 times today. The last time was very small though. She was more interested in eating her dinner than the other meals so that is good.
Lisa - did you continue to give your cat the new food and then he was ok? I'm too nervous to switch foods now. I'm only giving Nepheline her regular food b/c I want her to be ok again. (I'm a total wimp....)

Yes I still gave him the chicken soup.. he was fine in about a week, he loves it wont eat anything else. A Couple of Ragdoll breeders told me about the food and it's what they use and once thier cats got used to it, they never had a problem.
I strongly disagree with you. I volunteer at a wonderful feline rescue agency where all of the adult cats are fed the adult formula of Science Diet. All of the cats in the cat room are in superior health (all fully vetted and spayed/neutered as well- the room is throughly cleaned 2x a day and the cats are all brushed regurally and recieve a plentiful amount of love and attention) and they have not had any complications from their diets. I have found the science diet company to be very plesant to deal with, and I have had nothing but good experiences with their products. Not to mention, if over 50 cats that i am around all week long eat it on a regular basis, and it agrees with their stomachs and they have healthy coats, teeth, and digestive tracts....then i find it completely impossible to dislike Hills Science Diet. I am saying this from personal experience, and I have faith in their product and their company.
