And so pop music has been since there was pop music. At one time, Brill Building had the largest group of writers, including Neil Sedaka, Carly Simon, Neil Diamond, James Taylor and others too numerous to mention, next largest was Phil Spector, who probably started the cookie cutter clone singersOriginally Posted by strange_wings

And yes, I don't know how anyone would be surprised.
Yep! It goes quite far back - to all forms of pop music (think a lot of those 40s hits). The exception, even in pop, is found in those categorized as singer-song writers. They're often the ones that can play multiple instruments, understand music theory/went to school for it, and sell their songs to other pop singers.Originally Posted by sk_pacer

Aaaaaaah, but being able to read and understand music and play several instruments does NOT guarantee that one can write music. I fall into that category and have about enough talent in song writing ability to maybe re-write Three Blind Mice on a good day, however, I can arrange. A lot of talented lyricists can't read a not, but they sure write prettyOriginally Posted by strange_wings

I never said those songs necessarily had good lyrics. Most pop stuff has terrible lyrics! (or at least not very deep lyrics) But no one seems to care as long as the beat is catchy enough.Originally Posted by sk_pacer

That's not new news. He just confirmed what everyone already knew and/or suspected when he first came on the music scene. He was just too pretty and effeminate. Shame that he felt he had to wait so long to confirm the rumours.Originally Posted by -_aj_-

I could have sworn he came out last year or thereabouts. It was around when Clay Aiken came out, or shortly afterwards. I remember being actually surprised.Originally Posted by Rosiemac

Oh, there are a LOT of bad songs out there, drivel with catchy tunes, however those song mills did have good writers, and I did mention the four that had the best careers after they went out on their own. Hey, as far as deep lyrics go, favourite 60s groups were the Dave Clark Five and Herman's Hermits, after the Stones, Yardbirds and several other British blues bands.Originally Posted by strange_wings

To tie it back to the topic, sort of, his most popular hit doesn't have that great of lyrics - definitely no deep philosophical meaning to be found there.
