I caved in over the summer and bought a Nook. I looked at Kindle, but liked the Nook better. I'm really loving it, and reading a lot more than I used to before I got it. I just got the basic reader, all I want to do with it is read.
Are the books available new releases or old books? I read so much that I usually am waiting for the next book by my favourite authors and I would guess those new releases are not free.Originally Posted by mrblanche
There are a lot of free books available from various sources. I just had my sister check the catalog at her library system, and they currently have almost 8,000 books available. You CAN download music on them and listen, too. At least, on the newer ones.
you can get them free... Although most of the books I have been buying are less than $2 each. Amazon has a very large selection of bargain books and have specials every day/week/month it just depends on what you have! You can also borrow some books from friends, but they only last 2 weeks and you can only borrow once. Most new books are the same or less as the hardbacks.Originally Posted by Yosemite
You have to buy the books for them don't you? I don't buy books anymore. I used to download music to my computer but now that it isn't free anymore (limewire), I don't get any more music.
I get TONS of books for free and there are always new ones popping up not just classics or random books noone would really read. I also love that I can get books that dont really come out in print or come out on ebook first before being printed. Having my Kindle app also gave me access to quite a few new authors I wouldnt have bought in paperback. The downside, I got hooked on a series from a little novella that I got for free........I ended up absolutely having to have the rest of the series...at that point there were 10 books in it and its not done. Im currently waiting on book 12 which comes out in December. The nice thing is I can preorder them and they come right on my phone the day its released. I still get actual books though. But I only buy Nora Roberts to keep on my shelf. I also like that most books I get are only like $4. Especially the old Zebra historicals.Originally Posted by Yosemite

Because if Im going somewhere I dont want to have to cart my computer AND Kindle around just to look for free books or buy books. Its a pain in the butt viewing the book selection on my computer, Ive tried it and hate it. Especially since almost daily Im finishing a book and looking for more so its easier if I can access the web right on the Kindle and search for books rather than waiting to do it on my computer and then transfering them onto the Kindle. As of right now a Kindle is not happening for me because I have my smart phone and downloaded the Kindle app on it. I would love to get the Kindle so I can delete the app on my phone since it is literally killing my memory. I have a ton of books on my app and even putting them in archives they are still on my phone. Id love to get more books but I have to limit the ones I do get because of taking up space I dont have. A Kindle itself would solve my current issue.Originally Posted by mrblanche

As far as I know that option is not available for Kindle but I wont be surprised if it does come soon.Originally Posted by resqchick
Can you "lend" books on Kindle? On the nook, you can friend other nook users and borrow books back and forth. If you can do that, you can start a thread to lend books back and forth!!!
Honestly its kind of amazing how many places have free wifi, I dont use the 3g on mine that much! Many many restaurants offer wifi, as well as a lot of stores now!Originally Posted by 3CatsN1Dog

You can lend certain books and you can get them from the library. The lending option is only available one time and for only 2 weeks at a time right now, I really hope they change it a little.Originally Posted by 3CatsN1Dog

I just did some googling about the whole borrowing from the library thing and my local library does that. I never got a library card because Im horrible about remember to take stuff back on time but if I can borrow books on my Kindle app and then it just takes care of itself..heck yeah Im on board with that. I even double checked to make sure that most of the books I do read or books I want to read but am not willing to buy are available and they are. It is awesome since most of the books I want to read are older and arent available to be bought in a store but are in ebook format. So Im gonna be getting a library card and giving that whirl. It would be nice to constantly get new books to read without having to pay for them and then they wont take up all that memory on my phone.
If you're not near a computer or wifi hotspot you can browse Amazon or the web for books and download them anywhere. If I'm out walking Jamie and finish a book, I just download another. Ditto on the train, in a doctor's waiting room, when we're in Hungary (the house there has no phone or internet connection), sitting in a park, etc.. I could do it with my smartphone, but that's slower and not as pleasant to read.Originally Posted by mrblanche

The downside is that I dont really go anywhere that has free wifi. I cant even pick anything up at my house. My internet is off my cell phone plan, and if Im going to Mcdonalds where they have free wifi...Im going to eat not read. LOL its a big downside to being a homebody and living in the boonies where you cant get cable or high speed internet..let alone wireless internet. 3g is one of those things where if I spend the money on a Kindle its gonna have to be on it since the few place we do go where I would take it dont have wireless internet, like families houses and dfs work.Originally Posted by capt_jordi

The library's books are mostly recent releases.Originally Posted by Yosemite

Ummm, chicky, I would SERIOUSLY bring it back and exchange it! My charge usually lasts at LEAST 10 days, usually closer to 2 weeks, and I read all the time! Sounds like you got a lemon.Originally Posted by Momto3boys

It doesn't keep the charge AT ALL and there's nothing worse getting into bed at night to read and realizing your book is dead!
It ticks me the heck off
I've read about 6 books on it, had to charge it daily just to finish the books, it's been shoved in a drawer ever since! I wish I had have gotten the Kindle instead!
