My suggestion would be to get a bigger bird (african grey size or larger) - usually the cats don't want to mess with them - because they fight back.The smaller onces really have to be watch closely with the cats - right now I feel very comfy with the cats and the smaller birds - I know which w\\ones can't be trusted together and which ones I don't worry about as much. I still will not leave any birds out unsupervised - not only because of the cats, but because of the "woodworking" the bigger one like to do.
Two of my cats were kittens when I got them and two were adults. Truly it didn't make much difference. Really depends on the birds and the cats.
