Greetings! Happy Tuesday!

What is the meaning of your last name?

(I have two last names, hyphenated - when my parents married my mom kept hers, in turn I inherited both their last names)

Anyhoo, one means "Child of the Household of Heikki" and the other is "Hound or Warrior of the Sea"

One is Finnish, the other is Irish

interesting question of the day!

here's a link to a meaning of names website, where those who are interested can look up the meaning of their surname/last name -- http://surnames.meaning-of-names.com/ , because i had no idea about the meaning of my last name.

my last name means 'one who came from ______(my last name) -- the homestead on the hill', and is the name of several places in England.

my maiden name means "exiled, banished or outlawed". Nice. I guess I'll go stand in a corner now.

there is no known meaning for my married name so I'll make one up. "One who is no longer exiled, banished or outlawed".

Oh good. I can come out of the corner now.

My former married name meant "Grandson of little raven" and was Irish

My maiden name is a Germanized version of a French name that family legend says refers to an area in France.

Plastered or wasted....yes like drunk. If you take the è and make it just a regular e then it means stuffing.

My maiden name isn't on the list. As far as I know it's a name common among people in one small area of the north of England. There's a coat of arms for that family and I remember visiting a castle that had our family Coat of Arms above the door. It comes from the Old Norse for valley

My married name means North Mountain. This is the kanji for it.

There is no info my last name. According to family history, it was written down incorrectly or badly anglicized during immigration, but even the original name doesn't appear to mean anything. It is similar to the name of a town in Hungary, but that's the best I've been able to find. My paternal great-grandparents supposedly arrived from either Poland, or around the area of what is now the Czech Republic or Slovakia, or I've heard Lithuania. Sigh. It's frustrating that their history has been so hard to trace. I've been trying to research my Dad's side of the family for years. My Mom's side is the exact opposite- it's very well documented because we have some historically significant ancestors in the Scottish peerage. Quite a difference between the two sides! But that's part of the beauty of being American. :)

Technically, mine is made up.  When my grandparents came over from Russia (paternal side), the person couldn't spell their real name and I guess, wrote down whatever it sounded like to him.

Someone told me it means "Little House" but I don't see how that's possible considering the above.

Edit: Our family is also the only ones with this last name anywhere.  Hence, why I'm particularly cautious about giving it out to online friends unless I really trust them.
