The heel or just the end piece. I like those for toasting with honey because it doesn't soak through it; just into it. But mostly I make my kids eat them.

We have always called it the heel...even my mom and grandma did.I save mine in the freezer and I make my breadcrumbs in the food processor with them.

My first thought was "crust", but then remembered it's really the "heel". Obviously I don't think of their name very often. And like others, I use them only to keep the rest of the bread from drying out, and green bin them when all the slices are gone.

I eat it, but last, because I do like to keep it in to protect the inner pieces of bread.

I think my husband may throw it away, though. He likes white bread and I prefer whole grain, so we often have separate bread.
